Sorry, but I gave this as a present so I know nothing at all about it

No - it does not have it's own screen. You use it with your mobile phone. The lenses in the headset allow you to view VR via your phone.

Q: can you down load all VR apps or does it only work with the content from the VR center? also is it compatible with cardboard apps?

While Homido's own VR Centre app is quite a handy starting point (a neat, unfussy, well-curated collection of VR apps and experience) you're by no means limited to it. It's compatible with all Cardboard apps, and is basically (with its sturdy materials and sound design) one of the best available Cardboard-compatible headsets beneath the price point of a Samsung Gear VR or Google Daydream headset.
