I've learned a lot from this book
I've learned a lot from this book, and appreciate how clearly the information and recommendations are presented. Can you get this same information (free) on the internet? Of course you can. However, the experience, expertise, effort and time of a professional are all worth paying for, and to have it all presented in one place clearly is worth the money paid, particularly when considering matters of health.I am using this book in combination with another (by Dr. Greger) to attempt to manage my diet in a way that will preclude my taking the statins that are being advised by the doctor. If statins are not something that is needed to stave off immediate health disaster(s), then taking the time to read books such as this, and implement some or most of the recommendations are surely worth your time and money.Only time will tell if I have succeeded in lowering my LDL levels, but even if I do not, the advice in this book offers a general improvement to health in any case, and is advisable for everyone, not just those with high cholesterol. I, personally, am willing to pay for that expertise and advice, rather than faff around searching the internet for bits and pieces of what can be found here in one book.

Very Useful Book
In combination with online research, I used this book as a reference guide from which I formulated my own Cholesterol reduction diet and plan. It's written in an informative way and was (and still is) exceptionally useful to me. Over a 2 month period I achieved a 30% Cholesterol reduction from 6.1 to 4.1; so a pretty good result through a change in diet and regular exercise.

Mainly Scientific Book
I found this book helpful but the first part is devoted solely to scientific data which I felt was unnecessary for ordinary folk like me.The second part is more Informative but written more for the American market as a lot of the suggested foods would be difficult to find in the UK. However I will give it a go.

Excellent
Like the sister volume (blood pressure down) this is an excellent and informative book. Read them both with interest and trying to follow the advice as much as possible. Will know how I'm doing on next doctor visit.

A lot of medical mumbo jumbo, little else.
Bought this for my son to read. Once you get through the foreword, the introduction then a lot of medical terms and quotes from others, you get to learn about what high cholesterol will do to your body. Very 'uplifting' this bit. Technical terms and how the body transports this through your system, but way too technical, needs to be simplified. When you have worked your way through all the bumph about LDL, graphs, pictures, LDL vs HDL the next bit talks about 'targeting' the nasty little villain the LDL. Again lots of facts, figures quotes from others; great. The next bit refers to statins. Again that is a cheery little chapter! When you hit page 55 you get onto the first of the 10 step plan. This again is full of facts, figures and technical bits. This book has 316 pages in all. the last 113 pages are devoted to the Appendixes, meal planners, recipes, how to calculate your risk of dying from heart disease and finally notes and references! Wow! Basically the 10 stage plan could fit on a piece of A4 paper.1: Eat oats, everyday.2: Eat almonds and other nuts in moderation.3: Eat flaxseeds.4: Use Psyllium husks in your food or take capsules of this dietary fibre.5: Eat beans.6: Eat apples.7: Eat margarine with plant sterols.8: Eat soya protein9: Use garlic in your food.10: Walk. There is a whole chapter on each of above including case histories. Most of the practical non medical information you could get for free by doing some research yourself on the internet. Spend the money you would have spent buying this book on some nuts or apples!

If You Want to Lower Your Cholesterol Naturally...But This Book!
When my cholesterol levels started creeping up to unhealthy levels, higher and higher every annual visit to the doctor, he tried to get me on cholesterol medicine. I finally told him I was going to lower my cholesterol level through diet. He said, somewhat sarcastically, "fine, go buy your book and come back in six months." So that's exactly what I did. I went online, researched, and bought Cholesterol Down. Let me tell you, this book not only provides you with easy to understand information about what cholesterol is, what affects it, and the causes of high cholesterol - it provides excellent advice and methods to bring hour cholesterol down naturally. It's a very easy and interesting read. So I read the book, I followed the advice to a "t," excercised...and when I went back to the doctor six months later, he was incredibly impressed with how much my cholesterol levels had gone down to a very healthy level. Naturally. If you read this book and follow the advice of Dr. Brill, you can make lifestyle changes that are not a "diet," they are just a healthier way of living and eating to achieve and maintain a healthy cholesterol level and avoid the health risks associated with high cholesterol and having to take medication (which also has its own risks). You learn not only the things to avoid that are bad for your cholesterol, you learn the things to incorporate into your diet that naturally help lower cholesterol. And as an added bonus...the book provides delicious healthy recipes at the end.I bought this book for myself 4 years ago...and just bought it again for my cousin, who was recently diagnosed with high cholesterol. The book is VERY affordable and gives you a wealth of information. If I could give it 10 stars, I would. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Results achieved! Grateful for this helpful and practical book
In case it's helpful, I wanted to share my recent success after following this plan. My total cholesterol decreased from 304 to 233 in just 5 weeks by following most of the steps outlined in the appendix. My LDL-C dropped about 70 pts, and HDL dropped about 20 pts (trigycerides dropped about 20 also, and are OK). Admitting that i *tried* to follow the steps... i wasn't perfect every day, but i did about 80-90% of the steps daily-- which is: eat oatmeal with oatbran added and ground flaxseeds, take psyllium, eat beans, garlic (clove and supplement), apple, almonds, take plant sterol supplements, and walk 30 minutes. (see book for precise amounts). I did add some soy to my diet some days, but I didn't try for the rec'd 20g/day every day. It seems like the plant sterols and the soy intake recs may be more contentious now than when this book was published--just mentioning that FYI, but IDK, I'm not a doctor... But anyway, I'm very happy with these results, and I plan to continue following these basic steps until my next doctor visit and recheck--hoping the LDL-C numbers keep going down!

Smart advice! Very well written!
Easy to read and straightforward advice. Plus, I like the explanations for how cholesterol works in the body, and how certain foods can reduce the level of bad cholesterol and increase the good, with lots of scientific studies to back up the advice.
