My 70 year old mum is very pleased with this :)Post taken from Facebook:"have just spent a most enjoyable hour looking back at my childhood ,,well not mine personaly but a book on childhood in the 1950s, when i was growing up. To glance through the pictures of children playing ion bomb sites in the big cities,in burnt out cars.. skiipping in the middle of the road is a wonder to see.. it brings back memories, then there are are the random pics of children in classrooms. not posed,, just going about things generallygiving a true view of school at that time., and then I feel sad,,The chance of comiing across a picture of yourself is so remote, though possilble, but my sadness is that in 50 years time, there will be no records of this sort, only posed authorised photos taken, therefore, not showings daily events with real kids, and if one did come up, theres a good chance the faces would be obliterated,,so no chance of finding oneself,, so sad"

Delightful Memories
Paul Fenney's introduction to this marvellous book is a story in itself. He rightly pays tributes to the photographers who created the pictures that follow. They are accompanied by comments that are nostalgic but also personal memories of days long gone. I bought this for my older brother who taught me much that this book reminds me of. Every photograph has it's own moment that will pour out floods of reminiscences. It is very relevant to many and those whose memories we still retain.

Washed out photo printing
I was really keen to get this book, having seen examples of Roger Mayne's photos on line. There are very many photos, and the text for each is brief but informative. Sounds ideal - BUT all the photos are reproduced and printed in a washed-out manner and completely lacking in contrast. Obviously the book is very cheap for such a large number of photos, but even so they are very very disappointing. I have searched for a hardback version with hopefully better reproduction, but there doesn't seem to be one. I may return it.
