Works well
I was a little reluctant to buy yet another kitchen gadget, but we actually use this all the time. Just spread a little butter or spray oil on the inside before using. Only downside is it doesn’t work great for anything thin because it doesn’t firmly press against the cooking surface, like just a slice of bread or a grilled cheese for example.

Excellent sandwich maker, very easy to clean
I was a little skeptical that this would make a good hot sandwich, but after using it to make some hot cheesy sandwiches made with some leftover pot roast I have to say, this is a pretty cool kitchen tool! I'm not sure how well it works with American style bread slices, but I regularly buy shokupan (milk bread) from my local Japanese bakery, and I feel like it's a must for a successful hot sandwich with this maker. I usually buy the thin-sliced bread, but I think I will buy the thick cut bread next time to try making a bigger sandwich. A couple things to note:-pay mind to the size of your burner, my stovetop has two burner sizes, the larger one (for big stock pots) is too big for this sandwich maker, it surrounded the maker, and didn't really heat the center of it, even with my moving it around slowly. I ended up using the sandwich maker on my smaller/simmer burner, I just set it to medium and rested the handle to the side- after about 3 minutes on each side, I had golden brown toasty sandwich with melty cheese inside.-Don't put too much oil inside the maker, it will drip out and in the case of my stovetop, leaves grease marks on the burner's gas deflector. Use a minimal amount of oil and definitely sop up as much as possible with a towel.Cleaning the unit is extremely easy, it comes apart and was very easy to hand wash.

Wonderful and Lightweight
I took this little guy out for a short backpacking excursion this weekend. The clamshell pie iron was surprisingly light when I first unboxed it, however it is a feature not a bug. I brought a camping stove with me that is compact and the weight of the sandwich maker was just right to balance itself on the portable stove. The grooves on the outside of the clamshell gives the the stove arms something to grip onto preventing any falling or instability. The surface was mostly non-stick, but since I have only used it once, I can't comment on the durability. I do know that the product is designed by a Japanese company and manufactured in China. I would recommend using some sort of oil or grease while cooking to make cleanup a bit easier. The clamshell does separate into two different pieces, making two miniature skillets. The metal is sturdy and holds heat well enough.Overall I can see myself bringing this little guy to more trips. I have seen many people cook a variety of foods in this contraption. Getting creative with it just makes heading outdoors more enticing!

Useful just be careful when using
I actually saw one of these in a Korean cooking show, so I was curious how it performs compared to the electric version. This is all in Japanese fyi, just use Google translate for the little pamphlet with the instructions. But basically you need to put butter on both sides of the pan and/or both slices of bread, and close it, and keep 1min on each side on the flame. You don't need to hold it as long and you manage to put it on a straight position otherwise I can see it slide and risking to burn someone's feet or the floor. Definitely don't leave unsupervised. While it does grill the bread and melt the cheese inside nicely, and is amazingly non stick, be very careful when you open it. I took a star off because as soon as I took it out of the box and opened it the first time, the 2 halves broke apart. Like I had a pan in each hand. And took me a few minutes to find the correct position to hold them to put back together. I almost gave up. And that happened again when I was placing the first sandwich in. I wish it was held together by a screw or something.

Makes the perfect melt
I was skeptical upon receiving this. I thought there was no way this could do better than cooking a sandwich on my gas stove griddle. I was wrong. This is seriously awesome. To make my sandwich I buttered one side of the bread, put it butter side down, added cheese, turkey, more cheese, and the other slice of bread. Close it up and put it over the gas for like two minutes on either side, and it comes out perfectly. It toasts the bread nicely, so you get a good crunch and the cheese melts beautifully. This is something I will absolutely be using any time I make a sandwich. I definitely recommend. No more worrying about losing ingredients or your bread sliding when you go to flip your sandwich. With this, everything stays secure and in place.
