Between Us
I’ve now read eight of Mhairi McFarlane’s nine books, and I’ve loved every single one of them. They’re always funny, well-written and relatable, and she’s without doubt my favourite author of adult contemporary rom-coms. I wish my mum would have had the chance to read her books, as I’m sure she would have loved them just as much as I do.Between Us is just as good as I expected, with all the laughs, revelations, friendships, and comical swearing that I’ve come to expect from a Mhairi book. It’s also set in and around Manchester, and starts off in my town of Stockport at the Plaza Theatre, which is quite a rare occurrence indeed. It makes for an even better reading experience when it’s so easy to imagine places and landmarks, and that was an extra treat for me this time around.I really engaged with all the characters, especially Roisin (pronounced Rosheen, which Google kindly informed me), who’s the main focus here. Everyone is well realised and realistic, as always, and I really could imagine them all sat round a table celebrating their friendship group, after meeting at Waterstone’s Deansgate a decade earlier.Of course, there’s a fair bit of drama in Between Us, and it makes for an eye-opening story. I correctly guessed one or two twists and turns here and there, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment when they were finally brought to light. If anything, I was just happy that a certain character was about to get what they deserved. A ‘woohoo’ moment, if ever there was one!Between Us comes very highly recommended from me, as do all of Mhairi McFarlane’s books. If you’re looking for four-hundred pages of pure escapist joy, then stop your search — this book is exactly what you’re after, and I guarantee you’ll enjoy it. I can’t wait for book ten!4.5/5.

Not her best, not her worst (2.5 rounded up)
I buy Mhairi's novels without checking out the blurb, and this was no exception. However, it isn't her strongest book in my opinion. (That said, a friend of mine absolutely loved it, so there's that in terms of opinions.) Other books of hers I've read months or years ago and I still remember vividly. Here, it's been around 6 months and I can barely remember any of the characters.Things it's got going in its favor: Characters are flawed and the betrayal that Roisin feels is entirely relatable. I did feel pity for her throughout the novel and she was a very well developed and rounded character. Things that were meh: I laughed twice in the whole novel, and mostly because the jokes reminded me of inside jokes I've got with a friend (unlike other Mhairi novels where I LOLed because of the characters themselves). I didn't mega buy the relationship that appears toward the end – maybe because I felt that it appeared kind of out of nowhere. Had there been a couple more scenes that included interactions that showed the true simmering feelings, I would've felt it had a more natural flow. And I do not buy for a second that Dev confronts his issues or that everything's solved without any problem whatsoever.I don't know, maybe it's a matter of marketing too, as I read in another review. It's not really a rom-com, and that's what I was expecting. It's a novel about breaking up and dealing with the fallout of discovering certain truths about a relationship that's over. The "rom-com" is a second or third after-thought.I know that I sound very critical, but hear me out: if this is your first Mhairi novel, give "It's Not Me, It's You", "Last Night", and "Don't You Forget About Me" a chance.

A story about friends and group dynamics
Enjoyed this book and read it through without stopping. It was really refreshing to read about a group of friends who mostly stayed friends although some had become wealthy or successful, others satisfied with what might have seemed smaller triumphs. A book about generosity .
