Require Maintenance
The first clay pot arrived broken, and Amazon replaced it quickly within a few days. Since this terracotta pot is unglazed, it must be seasoned before use. After soaking it in water overnight, a hairline crack appeared at the lip of the pot. I researched how to seal crack lines on a clay pot. I pasted flour and water to the line and let it dry. The cracked line appears to be fixed, and the clay pot was fine after two hours of curing with olive oil in the oven. This is my third unglazed pot. My first one, from a different brand, cracked at first use because of uneven heat. The second one, also from another brand, broke on the second use because I forgot to soak it in water at least 15 minutes before. Since then, I have been reluctant to cook with unglazed clay pots. With this 3rd clay pot, I followed exactly all instructions prior to using it, and finally, my beef stew came out delicious. However, cleaning it is challenging. Unglazed clay pots cannot be washed with detergent and are sensitive to changes in temperature; however, hot water is needed to clean them effectively. I had to submerge the clay pot in gradual hot water temperatures to avoid cracking the pot. Also, the pot retains the food smell. So, before storing it and avoiding residual unpleasant odor, soak the clay pot in baking soda and water for at least half an hour. This clay pot is fragile. To store it, I keep it in its original foam box. After all the required maintenance of the pot, I don't see the benefit of an unglazed pot for food flavor. Therefore, I would not recommend unglazed clay pot cooking for someone with a busy daily schedule. But, if you have time, this is a nice pot.

It's a BIG clay pot! A bit rough.
Obviously, this is a large clay pot but I didn't realize how exactly like a flowerpot it would be. There is no glazing, or finish of any kind, only plain terracotta. This prompted me to do a bit of research as I was afraid I might accidentally break it by using it improperly. (There were NO instructions in the box with the pot.)According to several sources, unglazed terracotta MUST be soaked in cold water for at least 20 minutes prior to each use and should probably only be used in an oven. Apparently, being unglazed, it will be subject to breaking with sudden temperature changes. Since I got this to use in an earthen pit (that's the primitive in me) I may have to figure out how to line my earthen pit to make it a better oven. I have done a lot of Dutch-oven cooking in outdoor situations and even baked inside large pumpkins buried in the ground, so this will not be an entirely new experience. The instructions in the listing are more precise ... "Luksyol Clay cooking pots need to be seasoned before use. Soaked in water for 6 hours minimum. Left to dry for 1 hour. Rubbed with oil (olive or any frying oil). Placed in a cold oven and turned the heat on to 350 F / 175 C for 2 hours and left to get cold. Rubbed with oil again. Avoid sudden temperature change. Use the heat diffuser. The most important thing is the Moroccan tagine is not prepared to be high-fired, only from low fire."As for this pot (which is NOT a tagine, by the way--those have conical lids with a hole in the top) ... it was packed well in foam so arrived in one piece. However, the lid was separated from the pot only by a layer of heavy paper and there is a chip out of the bottom edge on one side (about an inch long but shallow). Since the lid does not fit tightly and is somewhat irregular in shape to start with, the missing bit is not going to make a difference. It is actually only visible when looking at it from the bottom. The overall appearance of the pot is somewhat rough. I have had actual flowerpots that had a smoother finish. At any rate, I am sure it will work fine, I just think it could have had a little bit better finish for something costing almost $40. I have given this 3 stars for the roughness of the pot, the lack of instructions and the price--which I think is somewhat steep considering the rough finish. I will be trying this out in the oven with a pot of rice and vegetables as my first experiment, and will update if anything breaks!
