Shoya Ishida starts bullying the new girl in class, Shoko Nishimiya, because she is deaf. But as the teasing continues, the rest of the class starts to turn on Shoya for his lack of compassion. When they leave elementary school, Shoko and Shoya do not speak to each other again... Until an older, wiser Shoya, tormented by his past behaviour, decides he must see Shoko once more. This film will challenge your concept of friendships
I am Japanese but I am not a big fan of animations, or any 'cuties' for that matter.Originally I was not interested in this film when it was released in the cinemas in London. However, I noticed it had got seriously good reviews back home and a DVD copy was available in the UK, so I decided to give it a go.I expected this film to be a mere stroy of a deaf person (her trial and error to be accepted and a happily-ever-after kind of simple ending), but I was utterly wrong: this is a stroy about bullying, friendships, redemption and rebirth.The theme is rather serious and heavy, but this film manages to unfold the story in an effortless fashion. It is rather a long film (over 2 hours) but you will not feel it.It was unfortunate that this film was released in Japan at the same time as 'Your Name.' by Shinkai. Commercially, this film did not do as well as 'Your Name.' in Japan in 2016. But if I were to chose only one to watch, I would definitely go for 'A Silent Voice'. No one can rise above Shinkai (who admires this film himself) visually, nonetheless, what this film delivers will make you reconsider your idea of friendships.By the way, the DVD shows the title as 'The shape of voice' in English subtitles, but this is a direct translation of the original Japanese title. Yes, you are watching the right film, in case you are wondering.

Isolation and loneliness, and how they are overcome
This film needs many viewings and a great deal of concentration. Very little happens and the plot developments are not always easy to follow. You have to be alert for the little clues (e.g. all those glimpses of legs). I daresay that makes it my kind of film, but it's tough viewing! What can I say (top of my head)? It is a remarkably sensitive study of isolation and loneliness, and how they are overcome, and how the crowd turns on the unpopular stranger and throws so many obstacles in his/her way. We begin by hating the boy for his appalling unkindness, and then we wonder what is going on inside the girl, and discover, little by little, that there is a story to be told about all the characters and their interactions. I do not think we ever discover how Shoya got like this, but we see how for him the way back begins with one act of unconsidered kindness to a stranger (lending his bicycle) which is the first tentative step on his journey. Deeply moving.

Ok to start I've not read any of the manga to this so when people say that a lot is missing from the movie i did not know but I do rate this movie 5stars because it is very good at showing almost all sides of wats going on as well as the emotions of the two kaine carriturs iv also got to admit that I cried through most of the movie it's a must see whether you have read the manga or not love this movie👍👍👌👌

Beautiful, shocking, complex film.
A story of human frailties, and the failed strategies and compromises and we adopt to cope with them. The protagonist is initially difficult to sympathize with, but I was hanging on his every word by the end. A film with heart and heart-stoppers.

I hadn't seen the film before the DVD release so ...
I hadn't seen the film before the DVD release so I was kinda stepping into the unknown with this. This film is absolutely gorgeous and lovely. It's also hard and emotional to watch. This film is definitely one I hope stands the test of time. As for the packaging, everything arrived safely and the product is completely satisfactory.
