So, I have just received the Maxi-Smart Lapping plate, and I can honestly state that this is quite a fantastic tool for flattening different kinds of sharpening stones. I have just tested it on my “boys”: 400, 8k and 10k. The deal was done with a couple of passages, and the stones came in excellent condition. In my view, it seems as it has suitable coarseness even for more than 10k. 
Also, I was impressed with the really BIG size of the plate. The plate easily covered my whetstones. The tactical feel is light despite the dimensions. 
Even after flattening it looks flawless. There are no visible traces and scratches at all.

I have spent a fair amount of money over the past 6 years on sharpening equipment (guides, water stones, ceramics and diamond plates). I'm always interested in learning the best and quickest ways to sharpen chisels and plane blades. Earlier I returned a $200 diamond plate to a vendor that was 160 grit as it left deep scratches on my waterstones that I was not comfortable with. I have since used other course brands of smaller 8 inch diamond plates in the 300-400 grit range with fairly good success. I just couldn't justify the $395 brand. When I saw this plate in a near 10 inch size with it's deep grooving design I was eager to give it a try. It proved to be very efficient on my water stones and Shaptons and I'm very satisfied with it. It's fast, no scratches and it does not create hydro lock. Using the entire 9.6 x 4.2 surface allows me to get consistent results on all my stones. I just use it under running water in the sink as it's light and easy to hold. Debris runs into the grooves and right off the plate. I really like this plate at this point.Customer Service was great! I had some delay in my initial delivery so I contacted Yan at Maffalo. He responded within minutes and eventually ensured I got it delivered and provided me with a coupon savings given my delay.

I was immediately impressed with the careful packing, and it came with an inspection certificate and a good set of instructions. There are also four self-adhesive rubber feet to keep the plate in place on a surface during use. I frequently dress my waterstones, and this plate does a nice job of quickly restoring their cutting surface. The grooves help displace slurry, and if you do the job under running water it is fast and easy. Nice product.

Received a few weeks ago and finally got around to flattening my Norton wet stones (1000, 4000, and 8000 grits). Plate was dead flat and was excited to see the results. Initially I was very happy with results as it worked as expected. I started on the lower grit stones but when I was doing my 8000 grit stone I noticed around the edges of the plate were getting shiny already. Closer inspection it appears the grit surface on the plate is already wearing on the edges on initial use. I do not think this product will last very long and will most likely not purchase a replacement.UPDATE: The plate is also leaving scratch marks on all my stones. I apply very light pressure and circlular motions over the plate and I get small circular scratches on the stones from the plate. I get better results using sandpaper on my surface plate.

I am taking fine woodworking at SFCC, for the end of this semester of hand tools is all about sharping chisels and plane blades. I have spent hours on my chisels and plane blades lapping all the backs flat, I have seen some wear spots on my Maxi-smart lapping plate. Even though I am using the ruler trick there is still hours of lapping, and I am getting good suction from all of my water stones (1,000 g 8,000 g, and 3,000 g 10,000 g) I have gotten some cross contamination in the fancy slurry grooves, so make sure you have a clean water bowl for each grit. I keep the combo water stones in separate tubs and use four separate bowls of clean water for each grit. I started with both water stones in one tub, and would dip my hand in the the water to keep the stone wet, and you guessed it my instructor said this is probably wear your cross contamination is occurring. I love the Maxi-smart Lapping Plate. Keep it clean.

Plate was good size but plate has small warp, I expected it to be completely flat since it is a sharpening stone leveling tool. Took it out of box and laid it on counter top, it rocked up and down similar to a uneven restaurant table, irritating. Found that the non abrasive side has imperfection and the abrasive side seemed more true. works ok if I put it on top of towel.

There were only 4 reviews for this product when I purchased it and all 4 reviews were 5 stars, so I went out on a limb, so to speak. I received the product timely and immediately used it. It immediately started cutting my stones really well (and very quickly). My stones are even, smooth, and ready for use. I was able to see how badly my stones were dished out. Used a straight edge and not a hint of light showed after flattening these stones. Additionally, the amount of surface space is excellent as it gives one room to move around without worrying about gouging the stone from going off the edge. Great product. Will recommend.

Impressed!! Bought this to tune up my KME water stones and it worked like a charm. Used a #2 pencil to make X marks on the stone and under running tap water I simply did a circular pattern on the lapping stone and WOW what great results. The stone face is more even that the day they arrived and it took just seconds to complete. Highly recommend!!!!!!!!!
