How did you come up with the idea for this product? In the UK, garden plant pots and trays are not recycled by local authorities because it is uneconomic to transport them. We wanted to design a range of useful garden products that could be made from recycled pots, and in doing so, create a demand for recycled pots and increase their value, making them economic to process. This means we now have the UK’s first sustainable plant pot recycling scheme underway all thanks to the products pulling and driving demand. What makes your product special? A bird feeder is very functional, it has a very clear and useful purpose rather than just being ‘the next fashion statement’. It genuinely helps people get more from their garden and introduces us all to nature which is never a bad thing. To help the environment all our products are designed with longevity in mind, the clear, simple clean design means it will fit within most tastes and won’t be thrown away because ‘orange’ is no longer in fashion. What has been the best part of your startup experience? Seeing something that was once just an idea, a little something in the back of your mind whilst cutting the lawn come to life, become something tangible, useful, helpful. Being able to make that idea from recycled materials and so contribute in some way to helping society is also greatly rewarding. It’s nice to know that a business you started from scratch is in some way contributing rather than just existing for one persons benefit.
