Good DVD - helps with phonics!
I brought this DVD as my son has just started school and is learning phonics. It is a great DVD as my son will sit and watch doing all the actions whilst having fun. Its just a shame its not a bit more modern, but then if they like it and they are learning then that's what counts. I have also purchased the Jolly Phonics books 1 - 7, these are also good as they have pictures which they can colour in and practice their writing of the letters - would recommend the DVD especially if your child is learning Jolly Phonics!!

Amazing how its has engaged my son.
Brilliant although I was worried about the dated style. I can't believe how my son has took to this. I had tried and tried to teach my son his phonics at time was nearly 4 he just wasn't interested. After watching this DVD a couple of times and parental support it's all clicked into placed for him and now can read simple phonic words after only a few weeks. So pleased :)

Good 'treat' after all the hard work!
I have used most of the Jolly Phonics resources in my classroom for several years now and find it an excellent programme. I do agree that the DVD is becoming dated and would love to see it updated. However, I use it more as a treat for the children rather than using it to teach them. I usually play each segment after I myself have taught the corresponding letter-sound relationships in the classroom as a reward for their hard work. The children can relax and enjoy getting to know Inky, Snake and Bee and we discuss/revise strategies the characters used afterwards. I haven't had anyone not know what Phonic the computer was yet, but I am sure that will come with time (at the moment we still have several computers around the school looking like 'Phonic' unfortunately)The DVD doesn't just contain the segment for children, but also valuable information about the programme and strategies for teaching that are very useful for teachers and parents. It is very good as an introduction and 'finding your feet' when beginning the programme for the first time. I often give it to teachers who are beginning to use the programme so that they can familiarise themselves more quickly with the programme and what it entails. It is just a visual way of reinforcing the programme and its key objectives and it is not just for kids, but also for adults implementing the programme.

Jolly Phonics DVD
As a teacher in a school that has just adopted the Jolly Phonics scheme I purchased this video for my own benefit to see if it would help me remember the actions suggested for each letter sound. In this I have found it very helpful. I think it would also be enjoyed by the targeted age group. This scheme has been very heavily promoted recently in Northern Ireland and I have some concerns that it has been oversold. This video demonstrated some of the problems associated with the scheme. The n, m, and to a lesser extent r sounds are produced with a vowel sound in front of them. This is the only way to get them long enough to match the action. This means that although snake had no difficulty hearing 3 sounds in hen, it would be entirely consistent with what they have been taught for the children to hear only 2 sounds the h and the n.As someone who up until recently has been working as a learning support teacher, I have also some concerns about the way blending is taught. The children are expected to pronounce all the letters in a 3 letter word e.g. cat separately and then to recognise the word. Many children have problems with aural working memory and are unable to process 3 letters at once. The only explicit teaching given was to say the sounds faster. This would work for some children but not all. These children need to blend as they go along yet this is not explicitly taught. That is blend the first 2 letters before adding the third. This explicit teaching of continuous blending should also be of help to children with good aural memories as it should enable them to access longer words using phonics.Snake in the DVD shows signs of acquiring blending as you go implicitly. Not all children can be relied on to do this. This DVD would in my opinion have been much improved if blending as you go had been taught. In short Jolly Phonics should be fun to do with children, but there are problems with the way some of the letters are sounded. Also I am concerned that children are being encouraged to sound out letters separately and then to listen for whole words instead of using continuous blending.

Excellent!
Definitely under rated - really good for teaching sounds and the writing of letters. Jolly Phonics method taught in schools with good results. This DVD is great for little ones, colourful and easy to follow can be watched in little chunks when attention span is limited.

My kids didn't like it. Its the first ever DVD they have ...
I'm sorry. My kids didn't like it. Its the first ever DVD they have disliked. They didn't grasp or pay it much attention. It needs to be updated drastically. The information is good. Its just wasted in this old 1980s dated format. Update and re-market. There are not many phonic DVDs helping pre-schoolers and reception age on the market at the moment. Money can be made here, if they spend time on new graphics. The set looks old. The toys/puppets look worn. It would of been better if it was a cartoon. Not good when compared to what animation standards are today.

Very dated
Given that the Jolly phonics setup is fantastic and has been embodied totally within education, I was very surprised how dated and cheap this CD was. No fault of the makers - because it must have been made a couple of decades ago. I'm giving my own age away if I say it reminds me of playschool in the 1970's. It really lets the Jolly Phonics brand down. The kids sort of looked at it, but became bored pretty quickly.
