A revolution in what is beauty for a home! With “how” too!
Beautiful illustrations and insightful, but playful writing! And I had no idea before! I’d just accepted, without thought, that “lawns” were what surround homes. And that complex gardens were extravagant luxuries. My eyes have changed. I see lawns and now see sameness and poisons. Chemical fields of green. The hope of this book is that it shows the *how* and *what* of the alternative! How to plant native plants. What lives well and easily and healthily in your area. And what to do to do put it together beautifully.I hope this is the start of a revolution. I think it’s moving to define new, wonderful beauty standards for the home!

Insightful book with beautiful illustrations
Insightful book with beautiful illustrations by one of the really bright lights of the design world John Gidding. For those that are interested in the metrics and aesthetics of shifting away from lawns to more resilient plantings that are more ecological and less water demanding this is a valuable resource.

beautiful art and thoughtful writing
This book is simply beautiful in terms of the art/photos, as would be expected from a design professor. I did not know anything about landscaping but was fascinated by the author's deeply thoughtful and intellectual approach, combining history, design, and ecological awareness. Like many who grew up in American suburbs, I never thought particularly deeply about the cookie-cutter landscaping that pervades our neighborhoods. This book shows you how to think more intentionally about the choices we make in shaping our own environment.

Brilliant book, incredible insights, glorious illustrations
It's one thing to have such a timely, insightful book about sustainable, nature-friendly landscaping from one of the world's greatest experts on the subject. But to have this accompanied by such moving and wonderful illustrations from the author makes this book particularly special. Highly highly recommended.

Warning invasive species pictured
Presumably the author meant well, but illustrations without captions is not helpful in a book of this sort. Imagine my shock when my plant identification app said that a full page illustration was not of the native American wisteria, but the invasive Chinese version! Yes, get rid of your lawn, but there are better advice books out there.
