Excellent 600W Studio Flash Light
This 600W studio flash light from Godox arrived well packed, in a Godox branded cardboard box.The Godox DP600III-V Studio Flash Light is an incremental upgrade over the older Godox DP600III, with the main difference being the use of a COB LED modelling lamp in the ‘III-V’ as opposed to the E27 bulb used in the ‘III’. Overall I would say the COB LED light is an improvement, as it is more power efficient and is brighter at 30W, meaning it could be used as a continuous light source should you wish to.The body of the light is well made and whilst not light weight, is certainly lighter than other studio flash lights I have used. The back panel contains the on/off switch and all the other physical controls, which are well laid out and labelled clearly. All the controls are easy to use, and only take a couple minutes to learn. There are multiple connectivity options. The best by far is the ability to use the flash with Godox’s own Wireless X System. This allows you to control it wirelessly, along with any other compatible flashes, strobes and lights you have. There is also a traditional 3.5mm sync port on the rear panel. And next to it is a USB Type-A socket which can be used to attach older legacy Godox triggers, as well as to update the firmware. Finally, the flash can be set in Slave mode.In use the studio flash light gave good results, was quiet, and was nice and easy to work with.In conclusion, this is a very good studio flash light from Godox. I’m not sure existing owners of the ‘DP600III’ model need to upgrade to it, unless they know for sure they need the features of the COB LED modelling light. However, for anyone after a new studio flash light, I can highly recommend it, especially if you are using, or intend to use, Godox’s Wireless X System.~ Ethics Statement: Amazon provided me with this product to review and asked in return that I give my honest and impartial opinion about it. Good, with issues
OK, so the good is that these are nicely built, solid feeling and easy to use lights, and when used in the right range with the right camera, they are very stable and produce decent light output.HOWEVER.I tried using these with a Nikon Z9, and the usable sync speed was really no better than 1/100. Anything between that and 1/200 (the camera sync speed) produced stronger and stronger dark banding at the top of the frame - I made sure everything was updated to latest firmware. The light just isn't fast enough for the Z9, and I suspect you will have similar issues with the Sony A1 and others. It's a shame, I liked them, but had to return them. By comparison, my AD300 lights had no such issue

Bring in the beast
I mostly use portable flashes for the versatility but wanted something with more power that is actually affordable. Enter this beast.Firstly, let's get past the fact that the box includes a pair of weird cheap gloves and a brush that are apparently for cleaning the flash. It's just strange and unnecessary. The flash until itself is a beast, by which I mean it is massive and weighs a tonne. Very substantial indeed. For that weight you get 600W of power and a 30W modelling light. The modelling light is really a different level to any other flash I own. It actually can be used to model the light. Overall the build quality is OK. It's an all plastic build but feels like good quality plastic.** Functionality **This connected to my XT1 (the old one) trigger straight away, despite not being listed as compatible. You can control the channel, group and model all from your trigger. One big omission is high speed sync. Max sync speed is 1/2000 which is less than some other models and a little disappointing. There is a fan to keep the heat down but it's very quiet. Recycle time is quick.** Conclusions **It's a huge heavy flash unit that delivers a punch. No HSS is for me a bug-bear given the size and weight of this thing. The modelling light is a big strength though so it really depends on if you need HSS or not.
