A black comedy starring Marlon Brando, David Niven and Shirley Jones. The action takes place in a quiet but rich part of Southern France where Lawrence Jameson also know as 'The Prince' (David Niven) has been conning countless women out of their fortunes for years until the arrival of Freddy Benson (Marlon Brando) who has been working 'cheap cons' since he left the army. As Benson and Jameson clash, it is agreed that one of them must leave. To decide who, they arrange a wager to see who can win the next woman they see and extract $25,000 from her the quickest.

David Niven beats Michael Caine
I don't understand previous reviewers' criticism of the DVD quality. My copy, bought from Amazon in 2009, is absolutely fine and the transfer to DVD is far better than a VHS tape. As to the film... it is the original upon which "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" is based. Many of the lines are identical in both films. What is different, however, is the acting quality. Bearing in mind this is a 1960s film, David Niven and Marlon Brando knock Michael Caine and Steven Martin into a cocked hat. David Niven is the archetypal debonaire charmer, whilst Marlon Brando has fun playing the brash American ingenue which he does with a subtler style than Steve Martin's sometimes "over-the-top" performance. Shirley Jones, as the female lead, does an adequate job, but this is probably where the film shows its age a little. The modern version with its twist in the tale gives a far more satisfactory ending. Having said that, the film is great entertainment and for anyone who knows the old "Cote d'Azur" it is a nostalgic trip round well-remembered places that have now sadly vanished under a layer of concrete.

The original dirty rotten scoundrels
I first remember watching this Film In a hotel room in Australia abour 15 years ago and loving it tas much then as i do now. Film is about two con men ( David Niven & Marlon Brando ) taking advantage of Wealthy women with both men trying to out do the other, its a very funny film .This is the original dirty rotten scoundrel movie, every bit as enjoyable as its predecessor .The fact that vetry little was changed when they made Dirty Rotten Scoundrels really says it all, however in its remake Steve Martin plays a far better part than Marlon Brando who at times looked liked he was rather uncomfortable playing this part.

Almost unwatchable
If you want to see the Riviera as it was in the 60s, forget it. This film is mostly interior studio sets, not on location on the Cote D'Azur. But apart from that, it's an awful film. Not funny, not even mildly amusing. How they got David Niven and Marlon Brando - given their track records of great films and stellar performances - beggars belief. To see Marlon Brando playing a ridiculous part with a dreadful script - bearing in mind his performances in Last Tango In Paris, A Streetcar named desire, On the Waterfront, The Wild One, Th Godfather and Apocalypse Now - just makes no sense. There are some great Hollywood comedies from the 50s and 60s, but this is not one of them, Don't waste your money. The remake (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) with Michael Caine and Steve Martin is leagues ahead, funny, and has lots of outdoor location shots on the gorgeous Riviera.

Niven and Brando make a superb combination. Brando is ...
Niven and Brando make a superb combination. Brando is not someone you think of as a comic actor, but he was hilarious. A hugely amusing film.

this makes it a total waste of every cent I have spent on it
This review is about this particular DVD release, not the film itself. And on that note, this film has been cropped down from its 1:85 ratio to 4:3, and the picture quality is average. For me, this makes it a total waste of every cent I have spent on it. Usually I check the specs very carefully before buying any DVD or Blu Ray release, but I must have dozed off during the research phase on this release, and so I deserve what I got.
