Great for small hands
This was just the perfect gift for my granddaughter. She loves it.

Ideal for younger children - chunky and robust
This is an excellent and robust first chemistry set for younger children, which I think would probably be a disappointment to older kids due to its simplicity, but is excellently pitched for children doing their first experiments mixing things to see the results. What you're mostly paying for are measuring beakers, test tubes, scales and pipette - all chunky enough to be easily manipulated by small hands, and which should withstand being dropped, spilled and other experiments gone wrong. The measuring beakers are great, though I question why the manufacturers would include weighing scales without any actual weights marked on them - this would be a very simple addition that wouldn't have unnecessarily complicated the activities. It's worth noting that you'll need to add some everyday household items, like shampoo or cooking oil, to carry out the experiments, but I wouldn't let this put you off. These are things that you're likely to already own, and excluding them from the set obviously helps to keep the cost down and minimise unnecessary packaging and waste. Overall, for any child starting school for the first time, or around that age, I think this would be an excellent investment. My 7-year-old daughter was on the cusp of feeling too old for the chunkiness of the set, but that's after a few years of carrying out other science experiments at home - I think that if she didn't have anything similar already, she'd have loved this set passionately.

Interesting science kit for kids
This science kit has useful experiment sheets for kids and comes with various pieces of equipment. I find that these kinds of sets are well-intentioned but children need a lot of adult supervision in order to get anything out of them on an educational level. This set is perfectly adequate but a little pricey.

Instead you get easy to follow instructions
This is very much a first chemistry set. None of the chemicals that my brother stained the carpet in the spare room with from his chemistry set in my younger years will be found here. Instead you get easy to follow instructions, beakers, test tubes and pipettes etc to allow you to conduct your own experiments. You will need a few bits and pieces from home. This is a set to get young minds thinking and curious about how things work. Great fun.

Could be better
The packaging of this box makes the contents appear far more exciting than they actually are. Opening the box is rather disappointing (even as an adult!).The contents are (all plastic): a test-tube stand for 3 test tubes (however, only 2 test-tubes supplied?), a weighing scale that lists 0-5 (so no actual weight), an experiment book in a variety of languages, three measuring jugs, a funnel and a pipette. They are, of course, designed for little hands – so the test-tube is not tiny such as you would find in a science lab, but more akin to the width of a shot-glass.Any ingredients that you need, you will have to rummage around the house for them as none are included. It is nothing taxing – shampoo, oil, water etc. so shouldn't be an issue. The experiments are very basic, so really only suited in a “My First Chemistry Set” scenario and I would question whether 6-7 year olds would find it interesting at all as it seems most suited to 4-5 year olds. Or maybe just the kids I know are all very bright. The success of this set will be whether the parent can be involved enough to keep the child’s attention engaged – fortunately there are some handy crib-notes in the instructions, with questions that parents can ask of the child (so no Doctorate required, for any parents panicking about their lack of science skills!). There are 10 experiments in total which are clearly explained – however, as mentioned, there are many languages included – so the short paragraph for each experiment is buried among the French/Spanish etc instructions. It would have been easier for the end user if each language had a separate page.My four year old nephew enjoyed it for about 30 minutes. Then he was off, back to playing with cars, leaving me with the set to clean and put away. There are better sets out there, so I cannot recommend this product; but for a very basic introduction to science for the very young, this is a start.

Very first science experiments
This very first chemistry set introduces simple scientific principles using ten experiments. The experiments are set out on cards so are easy to follow one at a time. The cards use pictures to show you step by step what to do and what to discuss. There is also a paper booklet which explains each experiment in writing if you need a little more help. The kit comes with plastic beakers, pipette, test tubes and simple scales (all chunky for little hands) and you will need a few basic household items such as oil, washing up liquid and shampoo. It's a lovely introduction to scientific thinking and because it doesn't require any special ingredients you can do the experiments over and over again. Great for pre-schoolers and early school-aged kids.

Oodles of fun!
I was most jealous when my sister received a chemistry set many years ago, for her birthday, so I could not wait to have a turn and do my own experiments at home. The box that this set arrived in was solid and most impressive. However, upon opening the box, I was left feeling a little let down by the paucity of its contents. Two large plastic tubes (test tubes) with a stand, a pipette, funnel, weighing scales (to weigh from 1-5 – no units of weight given) plus three plastic beakers with ml scales. The age range for this set is 4-7 years, hence the bulky, non-breakable, simplistic plastic kit. There are easy to follow diagrammatic instructions for the child and learning notes for the parent and these are excellent. There are 10 experiments in total and these are unbelievably fun for both parent and child to do together. The scientist will be experimenting with water and other household liquids and solids, weighing, mixing compounds, dissolving, understanding buoyancy, making an elastic material and creating a bubble liquid.Oodles of fun!
