Never mind Alice. Whatever happened to Claire Marrable?
Though you would be forgiven for thinking that Whatever Happened to Aunt Alice? is the undiscovered sequel to the better known (and very brilliant) Bette Davis film, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, the two films are unrelated (though they share the same producer) and very different in terms of plot, style and tone. Saying that, if I were a housekeeper I'd be feeling equally nervous working for either of the two film's leading ladies! From the moment that I sat down to watch Whatever Happened to Aunt Alice?, I was captivated by Geraldine Page's calculating and savage portrayal of Claire Marrable - an isolated widow with more than just her husband's death on her mind. I'm not going to tell you what happened to Aunt Alice...mainly because I'm more interested to know what happened to Claire Marrable (you'll know what I'm talking about when you've watched the movie). All I will say is that if you're in the mood for a camp horror flick/black comedy, or just curious to know what actually happened to Aunt Alice (and no, she didn't become a politican), then this is the film for you.

A delight, a gem, a classic treat.
Always an avid movie lover, I have this little "collection" in my head and heart that I so vividly remember as movies that enthrawled and delighted me so many years ago."Whatever Happened To Aunt Alice?" sits right up there at the top and I adore this movie each and every time I see it - as much as on my very first viewing. The absolutely wonderful Ruth Gordon makes any movie a winner for me, and she is a real treat to watch here. She dons yet again her hat of "elderly sleuth", as she goes "undercover" as a cleaner/help to Geraldine Page's reclusive and eccentric character - whose succession of helpers has mysteriously disappeared. The two women play so well off of one another and the atmosphere is dark and claustrophobic and yet endearing and comical. Very few other people make an appearance in this movie which focuses mainly on Page and Gordon. But then, with two such acting-greats, what more do you need?If you like this, try "Sleuth" with Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier. It's almost a male version of this movie and equally as fantastic.

Whatever Happened To The Child Actor Michael Barbera
It's a female serial killer thriller, with superb acting from Geraldine Page as Clare Marrabel, Ruth Gordon as 'Alice' - Alice Dimmock and Michael Barbera as Jim Vaughn. The rest of the cast maybe accredited or established actors but in this movie they seem to stand around waiting for the autocue.

Brilliant brilliant brilliant
They do not make movies like this anymore. Geraldine Page plays a nutcase hell bent on murdering every housekeeper that comes to work for her. What makes it so memorable is how she discards of the bodies (I won't give anything away here). Also adding effect is the spectacular music. Ruth Gordon joins the cast as a housekeeper trying to catch her out. Bad move Ruth. While this film might seem dated to many, no moviegoer can argue the brilliant acting and suspense. An all round favourite.

A cracking thriller lol
Just caught this film on Talking Pictures. This film is a pure joy to watch from beginning to end. It is definitely in line with other thrillers. Geraldine Paige was a fantastic actress. Who can forget her voicing in the original DisneyRescuers Film from 1978.Love it.

One of the greatest movies ever made!
This has to be one of the greatest movies of all time! Certainly one of my favourites, having watched it more than forty times to date, and still find it enjoyable!Award-winning performances here from both Ruth Gordon and Geraldine Page, as they take the lead in this 60s classic! There is something very disturbing about seeing two women fighting - especially when one is much older than the other. Ruth Gordon was 73 years old here to be playing such a demanding part physically, and was outlived by Page by only two years! Geraldine Page is great as the evil killer, and compare this role to the very 'inoffensive' one she played just five years earlier in the 1964 classic 'Dear Heart' opposite Glenn Ford - the comparison is amazing! This was one of the last of the great dramatic movies to be made in this genre.

Fastastic unknow film
It's a shame this movie isn't more well known. What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice is a great film. Great characters. Solid story. The actors are fantastic. This movie is low on gore but never boring. I do think the ending could have a been a little better but it's a small complaint for a wonderful movie overall

Better then most of this genre
This movie is better then the usuale Bidy horror films. The acting is outstanding. Geraldine Page is pure evil as a woman who finds a way to maintain her wealthy lifestyle. Its a shocker how she does this. Excellent support from Ruth Gordon and Mildred Dunnock.Rosemary Forsyt is also quite good as a neighboor. What ever happend to her?.All in all a highly reccomend above average horror film

Surprised at how great this movie is, when I first saw it about 10 years ago
I had never even heard of it, and must have rented it at a movie store at the time. The performances are great, as is the story. I bought "The Forbidden Garden" which the movie is based on, and will be reading it soon. Geraldine Page is excellent. The crazy is definitely in her eyes. A must see for a forgotten gem. Luckily, not totally forgotten since it has been released on Blu-ray. Don't pass it up if you like mystery/suspense movies!

Grand Guignol at it's best!
Set in Arizona, the delightfully demented Geraldine Page stars as Mrs. Marable, a recently widow who learns her husband left her in insoluble debt. So to suppliment her income, she hires a successions of housekeepers with nest eggs and offs them, becoming a deranged 'Mary Mary Quite Contrary' with her pine trees. When Ruth Gordon shows up, things take a turn for the interesting. The chemistry between these two veterans is impeccable. Gordon, fresh from her Academy Award winning role as Minnie Castevet in 'Rosemary's Baby' is spunky, lively, and hilarious. Page, who would win her own Award 16 years later for 'The Trip To Bountiful', plays it up to the hilt, bordering on campiness, but never straying. Robert Fuller, Rosemary Forsythe round out an excellent cast, with excellent direction from Lee Katzin, and sure footed production by Robert Aldrich, who's previous forays into Grand Guignol, 'What Ever Happened To Baby Jane', and 'Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte' are not lost on this entertaining ride. Prepare to be entertained with this black comedy.

What ever happened to aunt Alice(poor thing!)
The movie recalls Die, Die my Darling, with Talullah Bankhead. Really twisted lady with really twisted harpsichord music for soundtrack. Although Talullah, as Mrs. Trefoil is not really a murderer, just a religious fanatic, hateful mother-in-law from hell that loved her dead son as if he were her lover, and hated any woman that tried to get close to him. In Alice, played to the hilt by Geraldine Page, she is stoney broke, thanks to her dead husband, but she wants to continue to live high on the hog as if she is an aristocrat, but kills her housekeepers and steals their money to continue in her lifestyle. As a musician, harpsichord music can add to the suspense and horror of a movie, and this music does not disappoint.
