Save yourself money and frustration - buy a different gate.
I purchased this gate for the bottom of the stairs to prevent an active 1 year old from climbing unaccompanied. The gate was relatively easy to install; however, the gate is not easy nor intuitive to use. I (34 yr old male) have difficulty operating the gate with one hand, which is often necessary carrying children, various heavy/manly things, power tools, or large boxes. The gate is difficult to pull open and latch. I also find the gate does not retract well. After three days the gate does not retract fully, even with the ratcheting function the gate seems to have. I'm returning this gate and purchasing the ol' classic white metal gate with four adjustable posts. As evidence of my dissatisfaction, this is the first product review that I have ever written, or at least remember writing.

DONT WASTE TIME/MONEY ON THIS!!!!!
Horrible product. Noisy - can hear anywhere in the house while being pulled out or attempting retract. I put it in a standard door way and it took no less than 12 tries to get it to extend fully to attach on the other end. Retracting is nearly impossible, the button does nothing, pulls the screen back about 4 inches and then stalls and takes 39 mins just to eventually get back to the staring position. I will attempt to return for a refund, but since it’s been open and screwed in and attempted to use for a couple of weeks I’m not holding my breath. I will definitely be throwing it away if they will not let me send it back...that’s where it belongs anyway.

Not safe for stairs.
It was loud, difficult to use, and if pressure was applied to the gate, these little plastic parts would pop off and it would give. Maybe as a barrier in between rooms it would be ok, but at the top of the stairs, it just wasn't safe. Returned it.

Great concept and good implementation, mounting brackets could be sturdier though.
So far we like it. It took my wife a couple of days to figure out how to close it, however, she now has it down pat. It's really nice and definitely one of the better baby gates we've ever owned, and we're on our 3rd child in our second house so we've had a few different baby gates. The only thing I don't like is the mounting brackets. They could be a little sturdier, however, so far they are holding well. We'll see how they do over the life of the gate.

Requires patience and two free hands
Installation: The provided templates are a nice rough guide, but do not trust them to be accurate. Following their silly instructions in millimeters left me witha crooked gate the first try. The wall anchors provided were sketchy and I threw them away immediately for legit drywall anchors to fit their brackets.Operation: after reading the instructions and experimenting, they were very correct in having six steps to operate the gate into the closed position. **Lift an unecessary and difficult lever, twist a cap that doesn’t have a consistent click, pull the gate out and take care to not pull it crooked or too far out, hook the gate onto the brackets while not unhooking the bracket you just hooked onto, flip down unecessary and difficult lever.Retracting was even more ridiculous. Because the gate is ratcheted, you have to fight the mechanism somewhat to undo the brackets. But there is a mystery button under the inconsistent clicky twist part that you better have not installed against a wall because it’s the only way to release the locking cam. Retracting the fabric is as simple as allowing the retractor to pull about 2/3rds of the gate back in, then cussing at the gate while the final foot or so of fabric loosely dangles out like a sleeping dog’s tongue. All in all, I believe there is an engineer out there with no children or pets who is very proud of him/herself for creating the most pet/child/adult/swat team proof baby gate on the earth.Pros: The fabric is durable and I would suggest weaving it into a giant net to stop impending missile strikes.

They are not really that easy to install or use but they should be.
We ordered two of these units. They are a great idea but the implementation and design of the product are pretty poor. As an example, the unit must be installed using the cardboard templates which are part of the box so once they are cut out of the sides of the box the units cannot be returned. Both of the tolerances of the small flanges on the gate must be exactly positioned into the plastic mounting brackets on the wall or door frame. If not, you will have problems with these units. The operation of these gates is a hoot. #1 Move the lever on the top of the gate into an upright position. #2 Turn the Plastic knurled knob on top of the gate counter clockwise unit in clicks.#3 Pull the screen gate with the female channels directly across and hook onto the plastic male hooks. ( Note you must pull the screen all the way or the screen mechanism will lockup and you will have to retract the gate and start the sequence over again.) You must also use the "safety locks! .#4 To retract the gate you must unhook the safety locks (Kneel on the floor to get to the bottom because they don't always release very well ) Place the lever back to into the position in step one and the gate retracts almost completely. Good Luck :-)

Highly recommend!
This is a great way to save space. It looks like fabric but really strong and does the job! Installation was a piece of cake the box had a shaped back that after cutting out can be used as a ruler for easy installation. Highly recommend !!!

Don’t waste your money. GARBAGE
This is a complete piece of garbage. The latches popped off immediately. The procedure for closing the gate is ridiculous. Pull a tab up- twist the round knob and push a button in. I’m so annoyed with this piece of junk it’s being removed and thrown in the garbage. I used it at the bottom of the stairs - the flimsy gate latch just popped off - what if I had it at the top and my grandson leaned on it. I would return it but I bought it months ago when there was a special and my grandson wasn’t even crawling. We just installed it because he’s ready to walk. So disappointed.
