Q: How do you fold this up?

I am sure the manufacturer won't answer this way, but I skipped the screw that goes through the platform into the brace. They created this with upmost safety in mind so they put a screw in the platform to cover their own tails. By screwing the platform down, it removes a "moving part" component, so it's simpler and safer, but it can't be folded without removing the screw, and that's not very convenient. However, there are other brands of this product that are exactly the same design as this one and they don't have a screw in them. The platform simply folds down and sits on the brace, just like this one. This one is a WAY better price though. If you don't put the screw in, you can raise the platform, unhinge the 2 internal latches, and collapse the sides inward. I am very safety conscious, and I am comfortable NOT screwing the platform into the brace, and instead just letting the platform sit on the brace.

Q: Is it possible to assemble this in a way that is both safe and allows for easy folding?

Assemble everything, but leave the last final screw out. The one that secures the platform to the frame. It is not needed.

Q: Where does step/platform go when you fold the stool? Is the platform connected?

There is a screw that holds it down when assembled completely. If you want to store it you would have to remove the screw, lift the platform and then fold it all up. Don't use the screw if you plan to fold it up a lot. I just keep mine assembled in a corner.
