Recorded September 1976 at Basilika der Benediktinerabtei OttobeurenRecording Engineer: Martin WielandProduced by Manfred EicherHymns/Spheres, Keith Jarretts celebrated 1976 encounter with the Trinity organ of Ottobeurens Benedictine abbey, is at last released in its entirety on CD in this double-disc set prepared from the original analog tapes. No overdubs or technical ornamentations were utilized, only the pure sound of the organ in the abbey is heard. The pure sound, as channelled by the mind, hands, and feet of one of the great improvisers of the age. When Hymns/Spheres was first released in 1976, some critics made comparisons with the organ music of Ligeti, Messiaen and Reger, but time has shown this to be an essential expression of Jarretts creativity, original to the core.

A must for Keith Jarrett completists
This is the only organ album by Keith Jarrett. At times strangely impressive, sometimes brilliant, at other times lost in those vast acoustic spaces… Overall an intriguing work worth listening to time sand again. This recording contains the best quality organ recording I ever heard. A must for Keith Jarrett completists.

Face to face with eternity is all one can say when listening to this recording.
An incredible record! How Keith Jarrett gets those sounds out of a pipe organ I'll never know. Very beautiful music. Needs to be listened to when one is completely alone. It's hard to believe it is now over forty years old.

Hypnotic and beautiful!
I originally bought this for the 4th Movement that was used in the movie Samsara. But the whole album plays like a beautiful, hypnotic dirge. Just fantastic improvisation on a full scale organ. Highly recommended for fans of Philip Glass etc...

Keith Jarrett: Hymns / Spheres
This is difficult to rate. I've had only the chance to play in my car, and it took many, many (way to many) attempts to get the player to recognize the discs. After at least six tries, I finally got the first disc to load and and think it took even more on the second disc. The music is rather ethereal, and pleasant. I need to spend more time listening to it, and at home rather than while driving. But I do worry a bit about the CD player being able to read the discs.I found the liner notes intriguing that Jarrett was able to achieve effects previously unheard on the organ by pulling some stops part-way out, and enjoyed the line that pipe organs have always had this capability. Truly, the pipe organ is the king of instruments, and I purchased the album just to hear what Mr. Jarrett would do with it.

At last! Hymns/Spheres in all its glory
Finally we have the release that we Jarrett fans have been clamouring for since Noah built the Ark - the full double album of Hymns/Spheres available for the first time on CD. It's been a long wait, but it's worth it in the long run. These improvisations may not be to everyone's taste (I would suggest, for someone new to Jarrett's music, that they start with the Koln Concert before diving in the deep end here), but I personally found the work challenging and moving by turns. There is some noticeable hiss in quieter sections when listening on headphones, but the sound of the organ itself is fantastic. Folks who are interested in Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and the organ works of Olivier Messiaen should investigate this. Highly recommended.Well done ECM - now, how about releasing the full three-record set of the 1981 Bregenz/Munich concerts on CD?

Great Music -- Severe Technical Problems
It is very good that ECM has finally re-released in full Keith Jarrett's pipe-organ improvisations. The music is some of the most remarkable I have ever heard, and for me it is certainly one of Jarrett's most inspired works. However, something has gone very wrong with the production. For a start, the recording level is incredibly low, and, worse, even when the volume of my amplifier is turned way up, much higher than with any other CD I have ever played, the music sounds peculiarly boxed-in, deadened, for want of a better description. The music is brilliant, worthy of five stars; but the production has made me reduce it to three stars.Perhaps my memory is at fault, but I'm sure that the LPs of this release that I used to own gave a much deeper and wider sound than this. ECM is noted for its clear sounding productions. What on earth has happened here?

Very interesting disks
Second disk excellent - felt that disk 1 was Keith feeling his way on the strange instrument. Would like to hear more of Keith on Organ.

At Long Last.
I've waited nigh on 20 years for this full CD version; I've got the vinyl but no record deck... Sad, isn't it?
