Tenor Michael Spyres hails from Missouri, where his family of musicians runs an opera company. He originally intended to pursue a career in musicals but eventually turned to opera, studying in the US and Vienna. He has rapidly established a formidable reputation for his sensitive singing and astonishing vocal range, with leading roles at the Royal Opera House, the Lyric Theatre Chicago and Opéra de Paris. Espoir features 19th Century repertoire synonymous with the tenor-of-his-day, Gilbert-Louis Duprez. The program includes arias in French and Italian by Donizetti, Berlioz, Verdi and Rossini, as well as a duet with his co-star from Opera Rara's award-winning recording of Les Martyrs, Joyce El-Khoury.

Highly enjoyable--great voice & selection
Stunning vocals, excellent sound quality and a rewarding collection of arias of which only a few are a bit too familiar. Thoroughly enjoyed my first listening and am sure it will be even better the second time.

The finest tenor in the world today!! His singing, command of languages and acting is superb. There is not a tenor currently singing who can sing the breadth of repertoire that he can. He also interprets, at the highest level, what he sings, and that differentiates him from most his peers for that is what separates a true artist from just a singer. BRAVO Michael!!

Voice quality
I fail to understand the highratings given by previous reviewers. As a long term opera lovers I know prevous greats including Caruso, Bjorling, Pavarotti, Domingo and Kaufmann and this singer just does not compare. In fact , having listened to seveal items on the disc i gave it to te charity shop - sorry

Great recording
Love this recital which pleasingly mixes the familiar with the lesser known. Mr Spyres voice is very striking it has an extended upper range while retaining a baritonal timbre and yet displaying great flexibility. A great pleasure to listen even after many repeated hearings.

Michel Spyres hat für dieses Repertoire genau die richtige Stimme. Die Zusammenstellung ist gut gelungen und unterhält auf gutem Niveau. Diese Aufnahme nimmt man immer wieder gerne aus dem Regal, da sie für mich überdurchschnittlich gut gelungen ist. Ich freue mich über mehr von diesem wunderbaren Sänger.
