Supertramp: Live In Paris '79 [Blu-ray] [2012] [Region Free]

God bless the "Supertramp Partnership"!...
... for FINALLY giving us this treasure, buried for years under the weight of human smallness and... cow dung, yeah that too! :-DI'm at home, sick, running a 39 temperature, with no voice left and a headache that is killing me. Then, by mere chance, in one of the few moments I could bear standing in front of the pc screen, I see that the Paris video has been released... I jumped on my seat (despite my condition), and I was... happy, that's it. My wife came home, found me with this silly smile on my face, then asked: "Thank God, are you better?", and I, with what little voice I had left: "No, but the Supertramp's Paris concert has been released!". She must've thought I had completely lost it due to the fever. To some it may sound excessive, but this truly is a little dream come true. The chance to finally see one of the first two bands I ever listened to (the other being the Police) in their moment of grace. As I wrote above, I can only THANK again and again and again the band members who made this possible. Cause if it were up to the band's composers, and their incommunicability, stubbornness, pride, and other things that so often make us human beings smaller than we should be, this would have never seen the light of day.As far as Roger Hodgson's in particular is concerned, while I did sympathize with him and understood his bitterness for the band's playing his songs (in spite of the famous breakup agreement), and also for the fact that he had not been involved in the recent Supertramp "reunion" tour (and I agree that there can be no "reunion" if the author of the majority of the band's greatest hits is absent), I cannot, just cannot justify nor even understand how could he hinder the release of such a gem. I mean, are you out of your mind? Is the grudge against those who once were your friends and colleagues so strong?Roger Hodgson has stated in more than one occasion that there were legal issues preventing the release of the concert. Well, evidently those issues came from Roger himself, Rick Davies or both of them, given that - once they were happily bypassed - the video has been released. But what I found infuriating, is the fact that Roger (perhaps it was Rick, too) has been talking of alleged quality issues too. Man, that is such a LIE. This concert is a total beauty. As some other customers stated before me, these people, rockstars, should never forget that, yes, they wrote the music, but it were the fans who gave them the life they so luckily lead. And the memories, the joy those songs gave, they most certainly do NOT belong to them anymore. It is a matter of respect for the fans. You'll get your money, but please leave us our memories.I'm still quite sick, so I do not know if I made complete sense with what I said, I just felt the urge to do so.Go get yourself this gem, before those idiots and their lawyers make it disappear.

B loody Marvellous!!! - Supertramp Paris 1979
Blu Ray Quality concert films of classic bands are few and far between. Recordings made in the band’s heyday usually suffer from either poor picture or sound quality (sometimes both) which often look and sound terrible especially on HD / 5.1 Surround Sound. Whilst good recordings made during the later years are often made without key band members and sometimes the material is played and presented in a different style. The result is quite often disappointment and a feeling that you just had to be there. Luckily Supertramp Paris 79 is the real McCoy or just about as close as it gets to the real McCoy as possible. You do feel that you were there. Here is a HQ concert film that captures Supertramp a classic rock band live at the height of their popularity on the Breakfast in America tour and at their best.Supertramp was an example of band chemistry & synergy being more than the sum of its parts. Band leaders, singers and songwriters Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson came from different backgrounds and had very different outlooks and musical styles but as a team they clicked. They each wrote & sang their own songs that sounded like different counterpoints or characters. Davies masculine bluesy baritone and Hodgson’s childlike tenor – which sounded not dissimilar from Yes’s Jon Anderson. It made for an interesting dynamic that was lost after Hodgson’s departure in 1983. This explains why Breakfast in America remains Supertramp's commercial and artistic peak and of course just why this concert film is essential – it really brings the band chemistry alive – something that a concert video of the Davies version of Supertramp or a Roger Hodgson solo concert can never do as enjoyable as they might be.The Blu Ray is excellent, and both the picture is good since it was shot on film and sound esp. the DTS HD Master Audio is top notch. Ok visually it's not Talking Heads Stop Making Sense – there again how many concert films are? - and the band do look a bit dated like the Bee Gees with their white jump suits and long hair & beards. OK this was after all 1979! But the timeless quality of the music and performance wins the day. Classic songs performed by a great band at the top of their game. Some of the songs are missing from the concert film. Presumably they were cut and lost years ago and gone forever. At least the audio survives, and they are presented as bonus tracks with computer generated videos that can be played after watching the concert. The absence of some songs cut from the concert like You Started Laughing and Ain’t Nobody But Me does detract. Also, most of the missing songs are Davies’s songs so the concert focuses more on Hodgson’s material. But most of the essential songs survive in the film and the concert film is about 90mins so we do get our monies worth and 30 mins of audio extras can’t be scoffed at.Otherwise there is not much to complain about and plenty to be thankful for especially if you never got to see Supertramp live either with or without Hodgson - especially now that Supertramp no longer play live due Rick Davies health problems. A big thanks is required to everyone who made this Blu Ray possible.

It's About Time
I grew up listening to this band. This concert shows Supertramp at their absolute best and is a must-buy for anyone who appreciates their music. The 5.1 sound mix is superb and the picture quality is suprisingly good. It's very similar in quality to the Dire Straits Alchemy release from a couple of years ago.In terms of the concert, it's hard to believe sometimes that there are just five musicians on stage.I have to say though that it is massively frustrating being a Supertramp fan. This release has taken 32 years to appear despite numerous campaigns from the fans to get it released. Even now, there is wrangling amongst certain band members. I'm sorry, but fans like myself have made this band what they are today. Sometimes they have complete contempt for their fanbase and that annoys me immensely. Roger Hodgson is a very talented musician but appears to thrive on constantly whinging about some trivial matter. It's true that the band broke an agreement in performing his songs but it is slightly hyporcritical to then launch a "band" solo tour where he is the only recognisable member of Supertramp. If he wants to hear his songs performed in their proper context then he should never have left the band in '83 and he should put his differences with Rick aside and get back on stage or in the studio with the other members.Ignore the writs and wrangles and buy this release.

The One That Got Away
I missed the Supertramp BIA Tour in 1979 after the ‘tramp’s Roger and Rick fell out… managed to see Roger solo twice after but still wasn’t the same without the rest of the band. This… is as good as it gets folks!

Insuperable.
Gran concierto.
