Silverline Hinge Joint Divider 195mm Range (763562)

Very quick delivery for no charge. Can't complain about that at all...But upon removing the dividers from the carded display packaging, I couldn't open the arms at all... eventually I managed it by using a slim piece of metal between them and gently manoeuvring it till I could use my fingers... and discovered that the joint/hinge was completely rusted. This made it impossible to open or close the legs smoothly for accurate measurement. I tried a little 3in1 oil which did help a bit, but this leaves a mucky brown mess around the joint - not ideal for my purpose, which is measurement of Calligraphy font heights on BRIGHT WHITE paper most of the time.I wasn't expecting much for £4.88, they weren't going to be a top class, precision made tool. But I DID expect them to open\close so that they could be used for the basic purpose for which they were made.I'm returning them. Shame.

Like a previous reviewer I had extreme difficulty in opening the dividers, not as in his case due to rust, but because the hinge mechanism is far too tight. Even after loads of 3:1 oil them remain ridiculously stiff. I have brought them for one specific job (marking out scallops of some lead) and I reckon I can make them work. Other than that they seem sturdy enough and they were cheap
