Not for the casual history reader
This is NOT a book for a novice on the history of Rome, or even someone who has taken introductory level college courses on ancient Rome. The author does not take the time to define terms used in the book or give any amount of background when introducing new historical figures which makes the narrative difficult to digest. I'm sure the book is an excellent study on Roman warfare, but it will be a very difficult read for most readers.

This is indeed an excellent book for those who wish to better understand Western civilisation and the nature of the relationships between the Romans and other groups within the Empire. The book is well-written and is the result of outstanding research.
