Product Description Cynical Chicago journalist Frank Quinlan (William Hurt) is sent to investigate reports of an angel living in Iowa. His boss (Bob Hoskins) insists that he takes along angel expert Dorothy Winters (Andie MacDowell), but when they meet their celestial interviewee (John Travolta), he turns out to be an overweight, slobbish winged being. Frank is ordered to bring Michael to Chicago, but over the course of their journey Michael's charm begins to convert even Frank into believing that miracles can happen. .co.uk Review After the box-office success of Phenomenon, John Travolta continued to charm audiences with this 1996 comedy-fantasy in which he plays a grubby angel who's got one last good deed to do before heading back to heaven. Living peacefully in the rural Iowa home of an old, friendly motel owner (Jean Stapleton), the winged Michael (Travolta) is hardly the image of a perfect angel. He's scruffy, unshaven, eats sweetened cereal by the box-full and chain-smokes all day long. But when tabloid reporters (William Hurt, Robert Pastorelli) learn of Michael's alleged existence and head to Iowa to check him out, Michael soon realises that it's his task to see that Hurt falls in love with an "angel expert" (Andie MacDowell) and breaks free from his habitually cynical attitude. There's more to the story, of course (and Chasing Amy fans will recognise Joey Lauren Adams as a waitress who charms the angel), but Michael is more about the effect that this enchanting angel has on the earthbound humans around him. Whether he's chipping away at Hurt's scepticism or attracting a crowd of women on a truck-stop dance floor, Michael is an enchanting figure, and Travolta plays him with just the right tone of humour, reverence and effervescent charm. Sure, it's lightweight fluff, but director Nora Ephron specialises in lightweight fluff, and Michael is the kind of feel-good movie that never wears out its welcome. --Jeff Shannon

A surprising gem
We'd heard about and read up about this film for some time and only now managed to find one compatible to UK dvd players. This certainly is so and the film is a little gem.John Travolta takes the lead in this film where a trio of newspaper people are despatched to check out a story that an 'angel' is at large in a town somewhat away from their offices in Chicago. They all meet and are shocked by Travolta's demeanour and appearance, living in a suburban house with his landlady, he with a beer belly, long hair, less than angel like mannerisms, heavily smoking and...full length wings.During their few days together on a road trip back to Chicago, the trio witness his charm, intelligence, his empathy of each others' needs desires and fears and his pied-piperesque captivation of any women in his company.Once there is a tragic event to which he is called upon and they witness him carry out a minor miracle, their hitherto scepticism disappears and aware his "time" is drawing near (as apparently, angels only get up to 26 revisits and this is his) they hasten back to Chicago to present this honest-to-God angel to the world...whilst they can.No spoilers......get the film. You won't regret it.

... films and can't understand why it did not do better. It is a shame the DVD won't work ...
One of my fav films and can't understand why it did not do better. It is a shame the DVD won't work in the UK on some devices maybe something Amazon should look into as its 2016 and really should be able to see it in a compatible format. The film itself is about 3 journalists who work for a newspaper which prints the rather larger then life stories. They get a letter about someone living with a Angel. They go expecting to see some nut job and find Micheal who has wings, drinks, smokes and kind of does everything you would expect a angel not to do... It carries on from there where they try to take him back to the paper company. It is a feel good comedy and a different film to others I have seen. The story is pretty strong as is the cast and a worth while watch

My favourite film of all time !
For me; this film is just the best. I've seen it about three times now and every time I watch it I see more than I saw the last time. From the concussed bull to the excellent end sequence with the Van Morrison music it's just the best !

Chopped
One of my favourite films - coarse enough to avoid too much saccharin. This is a film with a big screen identity and unfortunately the version - the one in the picture with the huge PG on the front - I bought has been technically adapted to an old TV screen size thus wrecking the feel of the film. Disappointed

A feelgood film
We hadn't seen this film for years - but loved it as if for the fist time again, a super feelgood film that we didn't get bored of watching several times before our rental was up! Hoping you feel the same if you watch it. Two fifty-somethings!

Wrong aspect ratio. Avoid.
STANDARD VERSION. THIS FILM HAS BEEN MODIFIED AS FOLLOWS FROM ITS ORIGINAL VERSION, IT HAS BEEN FORMATTED TO FIT YOUR SCREEN. Wish I'd read that before I'd bought it or the other reviews for that matter. Hey ho, a bit of tinkering with your TVs aspect ratio setting and it's still watchable. Better copies out there for the money. Okay I've you've still got an old valve telly.
