Taken for a (train) ride with too many duplicated songs
Sometimes, there can be good reasoms for having alternative versions of the same song in a compilation. Unfortunately, here it appears just sloppy. I'll concede that there can be different songs with the same title (here there are two different songs on CD 6, both titled Big train) but that's OK.There are three versions of This train (Johnny Duncan, Hank Thompson, Reverened Ballenger), three versions of Wreck of the old '97 (Hank Snow, Lonnie Donegan, Johnny Cash) and two versions of many other songs including Wabash cannonball, which also appears a third time with different lyrics as Jukebox cannonball. Furthermore, there are two recordings by the same artist of Tennessee ghost train. Jimmy Dale's 1957 version sounds a little better than his 1953 version.Dates and (in some cases) chart positions are given without any explanation. The chart positions are misleading. I know that some relate to the British pop charts and some to the American country charts. Others may relate to the Americann pop or R+B charts. Who knows?Another problem is that some songs just don't belong here. Yonder comes a sucker (Jim Reeves) mentions railroad in a chorus line, but cannot seriously be classed as a train song. Big iron (Marty Robbins) has no connection whatsoever with trains or railroads that I can find. Mule train (two versions) is not a railroad song, as the mules themselves follow each other in line.I don't mind Jukebox cannonball, which although derived from a train song, has no train references except the cannonball, which is reduced to a metaphor. I also don't mind If I were a train (Teresa Brewer), which is also metaphorical but doesn't pretend to be anything else.Despite the excess duplication and the misleading chart info, I contemplated giving this box 4 stars because there is plenty of great music here. If all the duplication had been removed and the set been issued with fewer tracks, I'd probably have given it 5 stars. However, it became an irritating listening experience because the tracks are arranged in such a way that it's difficult to play two CD's one after the other without hearing at least one song and usually more repeated. Careful advance planning may make it possible to listen to three CD's back to back without any repeated song, but I haven't established whether that is possible.Having explained why I'm only giving this box 3 stars, I'll mention some of my favorites here. It's great to hear Last train to San Fernando (Johnny Duncan) again; it was a huge UK hit at the time but is rarely re-issued anywhere these days. I particulaly like Old black choo-choo (Maddox brothers and Rose) with Rose in the guise of a steam locomotive rusting away and lamenting its fate. Fantastic. Another great track is Night train to Memphis (Red Foley and Roberta Lee) that works well as a duet. There are other great tracks I could mention, but I'll close by saying that this is good value for money at the price if you can tolerate the problems. It could have been so much better.Track listingsCD 1 1. Hank Williams - Pan American 2. Doris Day - Choo Choo Train 3. Ken Colyer Skiffle Group - Streamline Train 4. Frankie Laine - Mule Train 5.
