The back is closed. However, I am long waisted and it fits high waisted.

I wore a regular strapped bra; however, I also wore a bolero over the dress sure the event I wore it to. If you’re going to bare your shoulders, you will probably want a strapless bra.

Q: Do the pleats stay after washing or is it an ironing nightmare?

The pleats have stayed. I've only worn the dress once so far but I had washed it before I wore it and washed it after. Hung it up to dry.
