Roja [DVD]

Oh what an excellent piece of cinema. IMHO it deserves to be considered a classic. The director includes a whole range of ingredients from chattering grannies and memorable songs to cold blooded acts of war, amidst a stunning backdrop of Kashmir scenery. It tells a long and compelling story of two very different individuals who, after getting married, find themselves placed in the most challenging situation imaginable and desperate to get out. The whole thing keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. The two main performances are superb and watching is not without its emotional points. Also I am a fan of Indian cinema that portrays strong women characters, including films such as Raazi and Queen, and Roja certainly has an admirablee female lead.

I'm exploring AR Rahman's contribution to film. I started with Roja. I liked the way the film looked at the personal relationships with a political backdrop.Madhoo is a wonderful actress portraying the determination and fesitiness of a strong woman. Arvind a great hero born out of an ordinay cryptologist. The music a masterpiece and deserving of it's accoclades. Finally Perfectly directed by Mani Ratnam.

The rating is specifically for the Tamil version that Amazon is currently offering for rental/purchase on Prime Video - don't do it. The quality is appalling, looks like a VHS copy stretched to the wrong aspect ratio. It's a joke that they're actually asking money for it, glad I chose rent not buy.The Telegu version (dub) of the film is currently free with Prime and looks 10x better than the Tamil version - sadly the subtitles are junk though.Awful quality control, Amazon simply do not seem to care what they're attaching their brand name to.

You have an option to rent HD but the quality of print is poor. Wrong advertising. Please refund my order.

A masterpiece by Mani Ratnam. Light music and with good story line. A have seen in original Tamil on Google movie play and then purchased it's Hindi version. Original Tamil version is much better than hindi version.

Roja is a classic of Indian, or more correctly Tamil Nadu, cinema. It marks the first film score penned by the now famous A. R. Rahman, and is the first in a trilogy of films about politics and relationships in India. Its followed by "Bombay" and "Dil Se," both of which I highly recommend any fan of foreign films see.Roja is a young woman from a small village who marries a man who originally came to ask for her sister's hand. At first Roja is insulted and bitter about this, but when the misunderstanding is cleared she and her husband form a close and loving bond. The bond is tested when Roja's husband is kidnapped by terrorists and she is thrust into the politics and bureaucracy of war and government.The movie as a whole is breathtaking and the music is addictive (most of it has a treasured spot on my ipod). It is well written and beautifully shot (in fact the director chooses the same cinematographer for many films), achieving the wonderful affect of having you truly care about what happens to the characters. At the end I found myself wondering what happened to everyone when it was over, as if they had really lived the story. It is not the light genera that viewers usually see in Bollywood films, so be prepared for some tough content. I can say with complete confidence it is a must see for any film fan.WARNING: I have bought this film twice on dvd and each time received a copy of the film from Bollywood Entertainment USA, dubbed in HINDI. The original Language is TAMIL, and there are major differences in the way it looks when it is spoken. You can tell sometimes in the dialogue that it has been dubbed (when the speak rapidly or really zoom in on someones face), but it only becomes annoying during the songs, when the audio and mouths rarely match up. If this is a pet peeve of yours don't buy this dvd. I believe Bollywood Entertainment USA is the only company that has released the dvd in region one, or the other format that plays in standard USA and Canada players (there may be an all regions dvd somewhere, or a region 3 in Tamil, but I have not come across any). I wanted to give fare warning, because it was the only thing that disappointed me.

So ... I bought this for the music, basically. A.R. Rahman's coming out party, more or less, and I was not disappointed. Brilliant music. And the story ... and the settings ... and yes.16 kinds of amazing.

Nice movie, performance, cinematography, direction,songs.Excellent video quality. But audio is 5.1Dolby but quality disappoints you. Audio 3/5. Mrp is 99rs.

I'm eager to watched this movie so many times...but I haven't found in hindi version, I thankful from bottom of my heart. Very excellent disc...Thanks
