Great Read that Ties Together Previously Plot Threads and Brings a Classic DC Villain Back into the Spotlight
Superman's fourth volume picks up after the restructuring of his New 52/Rebirth origins thanks to the Superman Reborn crossover. Finally able to live under his true name of Clark Kent, Supes and family have another fun team up with Batman and Robin only for Bruce to go missing. With more and more strange behavior going on from local members of the community, Supes and Lois realize there is a growing threat to their son Jon. The young Superboy has a dark influence trying to pry him apart from his father and the return of a classic Superman villain will tear apart the seams of the Kent family and their idyllic home.Spoilers BelowIn the most recent volume of Action Comics (Dan Jurgen's great parallel Superman series), the Kent family seemed to randomly make the decision to move to Metropolis. Despite Black Dawn coming out after Action Comics Volume 4, this book explains that decision. As it turns out, numerous members of the farm town community where Superman and Lois settled down are actually alien refugees living disguised as humans. Aside from a bit of a goofy Men in Black vibe, the book is actually a solid read and ties up numerous one off issues from earlier volumes of Tomasi's Superman run. A random earlier issue saw Jon stumbling across a strange black goo in the local swamp only to wind up believing it was a nightmare. The pay off arrives in this volume when we realize that the Kent's lovable neighbors (a young girl and her grandfather) are two of the alien refugees. All of these aliens seem to be watching Jon and trying to draw out his powers while pushing him away from his father. The reveal that the mastermind behind all this madness is actually Manchester Black is a solid one and his time in the book is a lot of fun as he uses his physic powers in particularly brutal ways. All in all one of the best volumes so far by Tomasi.

The payoff I had been waiting for in Superman rebirth
The art was occasionally a little hokey, but this was the payoff I had been waiting for from the Superman title. A lot of themes came together here, good dialogue, fantastic storyline. I didn't love the vaguely 1940s theme of some of the art and was a little shocked when Lois turned into a dirty blonde for some scenes. But those are minor quibbles. This was a lot of fun to read

A great Story-Arc, dispied some messy artwork
This edition of Superman Vol. 4: Black Dawn (which I got new) was over in near mint shape as well, that said the Black Dawn story-arc is overall mostly soiled and even a good starting point for new readers, thou some of art in the story is a little to messy which does not affect the story much at all

Return of a fun villain, but the execution is a little off.
Overall the story here is good and enjoyable, but some of the general pacing gets a little wonky, along with pages of rather hastily finished art around the middle of the book. Overall, it's not up to the quality standards of the rest of Tomasi / Gleason / Mahnke's run on the title. I would still recommend looking into it for fans of the series.

Solid
If you liked Volumes 1 and 2, you'll like this. Nice art and action. Good explanation to the mysteries surrounding Hamilton County.

Comic recomendable
