Another "Yankee Doodle" this time with Doris Day
Actually it is quite an unusual idea to produce a musical comedy about the U.S. Military Academy. The incomparable James Cagney and Americas sweetheart Doris Day in one movie - that should work well. And it does! Despite a sometimes slightly boring script both Doris and James Cagney play their parts in a very convincing way. Further criticism are the length of the movie and the fact that it is produced in black and white. Such a musical comedy needs Technicolor. Enthusiastic dancing scenes performed by Gene Nelson, Cagney and Doris Day as well as Virginia Mayo are further highlights. The sound track by Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn also fits perfectly. Doris and Gordon MacRae sing and play in perfect harmony. To sum it up: Nice entertainment with some weaknesses. Extras are a Oscar Winning Short "Granddad of Races", a Classic Cartoon "His Bitter Half" and Trailers of "West Point Story" and "Tea for Two".

Cagney carries the day
This is one of those cheapies that get made when a studio has stars galore whose time needs to be used. It is a decent enough vehicle for James Cagney as the impossible Broadway producer who ends up trying to stage West Point's annual revue - the cadets include Gordon McRrae and Gene Nelson, although the latter doesn't get all that much to do and is incapacitated in due course so that Cagney can strut his stuff. Virginia Mayo does a nice turn as his long suffering girlfriend, a Miss Adelaide type, and Doris Day does her girl next door film star performance. Passable stuff and Cagney's star power keeps on watching. But his character is hard to like while clearly meant to be impossible but loveable.

A star-filled musical
Though in black-and-white this should not deter anyone from puchasing this movie. With a host of stars like James Cagney (in terpsichorial rather than homicidal mode!), Doris Day, and the all-too-rarely seen Gene Nelson, and a score by Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn (not perhaps at their best, but entertaining just the same)this is a real feel-good movie.

Film Musical.
One of the lesser known musicals but worth watching for all that, Cagney showing his song and dance side and I wonder why Virginia Mayo did'nt do more song and dance. Gordon MacRae and Gene Nelson were to be reunited in Oklahoma! five years later, all in all an enjoyable film.

West Point Story
This is a fantastic film, it has the feel good factor and for a short while takes your mind off all your troubles. West point story is all the better for having Doris day and Gordon Macrae in it, and who both give fantatic performances. If you are not a fan of Doris Day or musical films its not for you.
