Who knew there was cavalry in Indiana?
As a native Hoosier, this was a new story to me. Jim Goecker chronicles the exploits of the 3rd IN cavalry, East Wing in meticulous detail. The story reads like Goecker was embedded with the unit and kept a journal. I especially enjoyed the story about the unit's service in the Battle of Gettysburg as well as the last chapter which reports what many of the soldiers did after the war.It is a must-read for anyone with an interest in Civil War and/or Indiana history.

It is factual and well researched. A good read.
Hoosier Spies and Horse Marines is a very readable Civil War story. It follows the brave men of the 3rd Indiana Cavalry through many of the major battles, including Gettysburg, PA, to the end of the war at Appomattox, VA. It is factual and well researched. A good read.

"Among the elite calvary units in the Army of the Potomac"
Mr. Goecker has written a very detailed narrative of an exceptional group of Indiana horse men who before the War were primarily "farm boys, river men and store clerks." He tells in elaberate detail the battle & troop movements, skirmishes, casualties, assignments, biographies and more of this unique Cavalry regiment beginning in August 1861 to Appomattox and beyond. These Hoosier cavalrymen participated in some of the major and famous battles (inc. Antietam & Gettysburg) and numerous skirmishes along the way. It is obvious that Mr. Goecker dug deep into the records, documents, letters, articles about this group. In the preface he states that he "will let the reader to determine if I have done them justice." In my opinion, YES, indeed he has!
