Joseph Epstein got it just right.
...as he always does. I am a big fan of books on writing English prose, and this is the best, at least the most enjoyable to read, that I have encountered. So far I have purchased one for myself, given one as a gift and required a friend to purchase another. I'm not done yet. Perhaps I should ask for a commission?

A stylish and fascinating guide to recognising and writing good prose.
Why have I never heard of this book before?Stylish, informed, informative and a fascinating guide to recognising and writing good prose. The man himself, Frank Laurence Lucas (1894–1967), apart from looking like everyone's idea of Sherlock Holmes, was a WWI veteran, an accomplished writer, a leading light of the code breakers at Bletchley in WWII and a vocal opponent of appeasement with Nazi Germany. This book is a rare treasure and deserves to be an oft-referenced classic.

Seems somewhat stuffy and has more Latin than I would have wished for--although, in truth, I would have wished for none--but it does quote a wonderful gruff letter written by Samuel Johnson to someone whose patronage he had requested. There are lovely books out there like "English Prose Style" by Herbert Read or the delightful "Artful Sentences: Syntax as Style" by Virginia Tufte. I heartily recommend both of those books.

The best book on writing; period.
"Style," says Lucas, "is personality clothed in words." This is a rumination on character, voice and virtue, refracted through encyclopedic reading. It is unlike any other book on writing in print - or out.

"Style" will never go out of style
This book may seem old-fashioned to some people, especially youngsters. But if you're a fan of writing guides as I am, Lucas's tome is a gift that keeps giving.

Excellent guide to the 'classic style'.
This is not only one of the best books I know about the art of writing: it is also a wonderful example of that very art. Lucas was still an inheritor of what we could call the 'classic style', which has always been marked by four fundamental features; clarity, elegance, precise and varied diction and the absence of the superfluous. These and other lessons are distilled in the book, adorned by the erudition of the great critic and professor which Lucan mainly was.Lord Chesterfield said in one of his letters that he had tried to perfect his prose until writing with no poise was almost impossible to him. If this was so in the 18th century, what now, when we are bombarded by so much misuse and abuse of language and by so many poor oral and written models? Although there are natural gifts for writing -as for every other art- Chesterton's words remind us that good, precise, elegant prose can be learnt and preserved. Lucas offers us invaluable help in this endeavour, which is not only relevant to the spheres of literature or the academic, but to all who must express themselves through the medium of educated language.

This is perhaps the worst book I've ever tried to read
This is perhaps the worst book I've ever tried to read. I can't believe it is meant to be a book on style. It's a typical post -graduate British style that is pompous and unintelligible. I could give averbatim examples, but who knows what "conchible" means anyway? Don're waste your money on this book unless you want a good laugh.

My favorite book on writing
My favorite book on writing. A man that is talented and fluent in many languages gives us numerous examples and insights into the beauty of style in writing. Has helped my writing immensely.
