Works great, love the size
The sticker on the top of the heat plate that says "bottom" with a photo is a little confusing, but I understand what it is trying to show. That is my only complaint so far on this product. It was easy to assemble, change height and clean. The temp it puts out seems perfect.I bought several to send with families who "chick-sit" our hatchlings to learn how to care for them. So much safer than heat lamps! Heat plate is hot to the touch, but not so hot a child will burn themselves as soon as they touch it.Fits 7-10 three week old chicks comfortably, though they are rarely all under it at the same time.

Perfect for raising baby chicks
I hatch out several groups of chicks during the early part of the year. What I'm not thrilled about is seeing what it costs to run several 250 watt heat lamp bulbs at a time - it's expensive. While I'm extremely careful with checking bulbs and cleaning dust off daily, putting covers over brooders, minding cord placement, and secondary securing methods, there's still always risk associated with bulb usage. So, I decided to switch over to brooder plates for some. Also, I live in Minnesota where it can still get very cold and snowy into the month of April. But it's highly beneficial to start birds as early so they can grow as much as possible before next winter rolls in. The trick is getting them acclimated and outside without stressing them too much or having them chill. This year, thanks to the warmer temps, I was able to start in January. I had several large groups (+10) that were already a few weeks old so a smaller plate wouldn't get me very far, so I opted for the largest. These plates are extremely quick to assemble and snap together like the name brand ones. They do take a little bit of time to heat up but they are comfortable to the touch. I currently have about 12 week-old chicks under one and there's still ample room underneath. Another benefit is that it gives the chicks a more natural night/day. Also, chicks under plates seem to feather out faster (which makes sense) and will allow me to remove the heat source sooner than I would for chicks under a red bulb.I will still prefer to raise them under a heat lamp for the first week so they get a good, solid start but I'll most likely be ordering more of these for the future. Great size, effective, and easy on the wallet.

Works well
This was perfect for the duckling we hatched. Originally we started utilizing a heating lamp… but that is worrisome at night and really at anytime due to the risk of fire. I felt much safer using this product. It kept the duckling warm enough and we would utilize this again.

Plate gets too hot! Unsafe.
Note* Image included is of my modification, NOT how the item arrives. This brooder plate got WAY to hot to be safe for chicks. It would burn you if you held your hand on the plate for more than a second or two. My measure came out that the surface temperature of the plate got up to 162 degrees Fahrenheit! These plates are supposed to function in a way that the chicks can press their back up against it directly to stay warm.Unfortunately I needed to make it work because I had no other heat source option and no time to order a new one. We custom cut out hardware cloth to place over top and clamped it in place (leaving an air gap between the hardware cloth and the heat plate) to prevent the chicks from making direct contact. It is functioning well with this modification, however I would NEVER use it without this in place.Save your money -- get a better, safer, more well known brand.

Safe sturdy chick heater
Of all the heating options out there this one is my favorite! I’ve ordered it twice for my inside brooder box and another one for outside when I first put young ones out if it’s below freezing at night. The legs are sturdy and easy to raise and lower. I would highly recommend this heat plate and it’s much safer than a heat lamp.. no risk of fire.

Too small
Small. Not enough room for a 12 chick incubator hatch?Like the design though, and seems like good quality, easy to put together

Works fine.
We have successfully raised two batches of chicks with this and we have had no problems. Would recommend.
