Developed over the last 400 years, Wakasa nuri, or Wakasa lacquer, has established its brand as the special craft through competition among the feudal clans during the Edo era: developing the local lacquer ware industry. Until today, there are varieties of the finest Wakasa lacquered chopsticks. Once properly lacquered, it takes 10 days for a lacquer artist to dry the lacquer with careful scrutiny to assure that they will never change color and shrink. In all, 15 layers of coats will go on to make this black lacquer. Finally, a worker carefully polishes the lacquer by hands to take down any irregularities, and makes the surface absolutely smooth. Every artist of Hyozaemon is committed to carry on a traditional Wakasa lacquer, the most distinctive and authentic lacquer that you can feel the care put into it. An artist completes his work with half a year of a patient labor. Due to the rising cost of lacquer, we might raise the price in the future without prior notice. Wakasa lacquered chopsticks are our bestselling products.
