GREAT movie that happens to have Kung Fu Action.
This is one of the best martial arts movie I have seen in a long time. Why?Because it is about people and their emotions, needs, and struggles to find meaning in their lives. The Kung Fu action is entirely secondary. In my opinion, this would have been a good film even without its Kung Fu action. It has two of the most memorable characters in all of Kung Fu films. Their relationship is humorous, respectful, and unusual."I am afraid of death too, and I don't even like the sight of blood", confesses the great Kung Fu Master assassin. The main movie I would compare this to is the "Twilight Samurai", which was also about great martial artists and their daily struggles as human beings. The only part of the movie that was a letdown was the fighting sequence involving the Kung Fu Master and his fiance. I thought that was little too dramatized and I didn't really see the point of it.This is overall a fantastic film and deserves to be called one of top 5 greatest Kung Fu films ever made.

HOLY CRAP!
I saw an advertisement for this and I wanted to see some Kung Fu type action. I didn't expect that I would actually really, really like the story. The movie starts out kind of slow and confusing and the reason why is because there are 4-5 different story lines that are tangled together. Much like how some movies start with the end at the beginning prefacing what's to come, this movie requires 20-30 minutes to set the stage. In the end, all essential characters get their closure and, to me, it was extremely well done.Pros:Awesome Stories (Personal Achievement, Love Stories (3 of them comingled and not cheesy), etc)Fighting scenesSurpriseSuspenseCons:Occasional Crappy CGI (less than 40 seconds of the movie)Little confusing at the beginningFight scenes weren't longer (if that's what you came for this movie might not be the best)

A worthwile use of liesure time for sure
I swear, I have seen this before but it is not in my library so I must have watched it on some pay channel once. I like Peter Ho, his tats make me think of Brandon Lee in "The Crow." The fighting is good, very good, and the chick is way cute.

Recommended!
I was engaged and intrigued throughout the movie and enjoyed the fight scenes (a bit over the top but I expected that going in). You have to watch closely to catch a few of the curve balls it throws (before they are fully revealed). In that sense it is somewhat like a puzzle to be solved as well as a movie to be watched...I enjoyed this aspect. It has subtitles and in a few spots they moved a little quicker than I could read them but it was easy to do a quick backup to catch the whole conversation. If you generally like this type of movie...I highly recommend it.

Finest Swordplay Ballet
The sword plays, both athletically real and choreographed/edited, are artworks. So much to love in this one. Should have purchased instead of renting. The soap-opera stuff was not too boring, the philosophy was honored, the traditions were respected. My untrained eye was completely fooled 95% of the time. Tons of excellence. If this genre is what you want -- this is the film you're seeking.2nd viewing a few days later before the rental period ran out -- the beautiful moves, the faces, the stories all still kept me held.Future me -- rent or buy anytime passed, say, Sept. 2017 would be long enough to wait.

Engaging Story line, great fight scenes and well put together.
This film kept me engaged from start to finish. The soap opera scenes where acceptable (that is why i nearly gave it 4 stars). The fight scenes where very well made. The cinematography and film quality overall was very good. The story itself is interesting - while at some points you wonder how things connect but it becomes clear.Without giving anything away, this was one of the few movies (and I watch tons of movies) where the ending was not predictable which made it that much better. If you are into "refreshed" martial arts movies, enjoyed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and movies like those, this one will fit the bill.

Great characters, action, and story.
Plenty of sword action in this movie. The story is complex with complicated and interesting characters. Tsui Hark has his hand in this so you know it’s quality and bordering on fantasy. Great cinematography and music.

Superb martial arts movie
Sword Master plays tribute to the 1977 Shaw Brothers Studio movie "Death Duel" which starred the director of Sword Master Derek Yee. Peter Ho plays the tattooed swordsman Yen Shisan who lived in the shadow Of the third master/Hsieh Shao-Feng. The tattooed assain in a bid to become the greatest swordsman seeks out the third swordmaster only to find he is dead giving up all hopes of life with his own health failing Yen Shisan to find a place to die. But it is not so simple and in a strange twist of events, all the fighters are brought together in a dramatic climax. The story is of love, betrayal, revenge, and honor. One of my all-time favorite martial arts movies this 2016 movie is groundbreaking with much of the action being copied in many later films.
