I used a balloon blow up machine. You could also use a straw

I didn't use a backdrop. Instead I attached the arch over the doorway on the wall going into my dining room. It is a little wider than a normal doorway but it had plenty of balloons. I don't think you will have a problem with it looking like there are not enough balloons. Just don't put too much sir in them trying to make them take up more space. They will start popping! When they run each other, they will pop. When people walk by them and from the air movement, they will start popping. Good luck with this if you buy it. It does look amazing once it's done... Until they start popping. I don't know if this helped you or not but I hope so.
