Dissects the Roadblocks! Explains Why We So Often Are How We Don't Want to Be
I am so glad this book gets the five-star rating it does, because that alone convinced me to purchase. And it more than lived up to that rating!I underlined, starred, and wrote so many comments in the blank spaces and margins that this book really became a working journal.Key insights for me are: how the ability to love unconditionally alleviates many emotional fears; shame vs. guilt, sadness vs. depression, jealousy vs. envy and especially how Tenny ties them all together in a way that shows the potential chain-reaction of one emotion leading to another until we get to what he calls "overwhelm" (which is pretty much what I was experiencing when I read this book! )And my overwhelm always comes back to me: why can't I be the way I perceive myself, or want to perceive myself?!!!Tenny gets to the crux of that very question, not planting suggestions that we are such and such, but laying it out in such a way that we come to our own conclusions about ourselves. For instance, I realized through reading this book that one of my key dysfunctional drivers is fear of losing what I love most, and being the sole cause of that loss. This would perhaps be due to abandonment/attachment issues, but really, it isn't the why that mattes so much as the "is." If this is the way I am, then great, now I know!Tenny doesn't leave us there: he provides solid, legit bullet points of how to deal with each emotion, as well as really succinct checklists of indicators that we may be experiencing such and such emotion. That was good because I could just go down the list and circle the indicators that resonated with me.The book is about 100 pages, and for these 60-year-old eyes, a larger, easily readable print (and yes, at 60 I am definitely still trying to figure myself out, and this is another great book to bring me closer to that!)All in all, this is a very to-the-point, objective in a good way, clear and hope-filled book that not only provides enlightenment on the most common and persistently bothersome (debilitating?) emotions, but a clear way out if we are willing to honestly and seriously heed and practice Tenny's suggestions.
