(2-CD set) World War 1 began on July 28, 1914 and was also known as the Great War in the optimistic belief that this momentous event would end all wars. Some of our most popular and enduring songs were written and recorded during that period, although the conflict itself was horrendous. In 1997 Take Two Records released a 2-CD set of songs actually recorded during World War 1 that were transferred from pristine vintage recordings and re-mastered to provide superb sound. This set includes 40 popular songs that reflect a variety of reactions to the Great War by the leading songwriters and recording artists from that time. This album is currently being reissued to commemorate the WWI centennial taking place this year.

It is a very good collection of songs from that era - not too few and not too many.
This is an outstanding collection of songs from the WWI era and slightly beyond.But they were all written between 1914-1919. I already knew many of the songson this album - some I heard from my grandfather and others from movies and old78 RPM recordings that I'd acquired.Over 14,000 songs were written during that era - many of them about the war even thoughwe did not get involved until 1917. This is a good sampling of them.I played this CD at a Centennial of the end of WWI Presentation that my historical societygave on May 24th prior to a slide show and guest speaker.If you don't mind old-timey music styles (as I do), you will enjoy this.There are some songs on here done by Al Jolson, "The World's Greatest Entertainer").He was in the first feature-length movie, "The Jazz Singer", and subject of 2 movies about his life.

Ordered this as a gift for a member of the greatest generation, a genuine WWII veteran. He grew up with these songs, and he appreciates hearing them again.

Songs Set Scene for Storytelling Performance
I am a professional storyteller, and I recently premiered a new program about World War 1. I wanted original music to play as the audience arrived and exited the performance. This was perfect! Hearing the original voices from wax really set the mood of the show. Should I ever write a short story or novel set in the era, these CDs definitely will play in the background as I write.

WWI Songs
I needed the song A long Trail for my play. Did a search and found this CD. Even if you are not old enough to"remember" hearing these you will know some of them.Many of these songs remained popular into the 30's and some were revived during WWII. EVen with the scratchy quality they are fun and nostalgic of a lost decade.Hopefully if you listen you will get interested in a lost way of life and discover the hopefulness in the existence of a belief that war could eradicate hate and greed.Long,Long Trail is a favorite of mine from when I was very young.
