Young Ones [Blu-ray]

The acting in this movie is some of the best you'll see, particularly Elle Fanning. The story line is a little slow but interesting, about a man who owns a small farm with no water. He has a paraplegic wife, a 14 year old son, and a 16 year old daughter. It would be unfair to give away too much of the storyline here. Let's just say it is convoluted, with lessons in character, integrity, and survival, along with the worst of human character. I give it Five Stars.

Very interesting and intelligent little movie. With the exception of Elle Fanning (who I found annoying) I liked it very much. Consider a mixture of: Gattaca, A Boy and His Dog, Thunderdome, Interstellar and a dash of Spaghetti Western. It does move slowly (for modern audiences) but I like that. It's more a crock pot than a microwave. Add in a nice morality underpinning and it was well worth my time.

While there is one tongue-in-cheek scene of what you would rightly expect to be a western livestock auction, the "livestock" enter the set as assorted mechanical mules and such that don't need water which is in very short supply in this post-apocalyptic landscape. That, friends, is about as much sci fi as you're going to see in this film. But while it is lite on such props, it is amply casted with good though unknown actors who carry the twists and turns of the story to its satisfying conclusion, western style, with nary a judge or jury. And so this film would be better categorized as a dystopian western where people are busy getting back on their feet. Water may be in short supply, but there is commerce, short wave, a facility for the disabled (with a clever mechanical device), trucks, cars and motorcycles and an occasional jet speeds far above. And if you blackmail the "water authority", you can have your farm irrigated. Suits and ties and hats, dusty though they are, still remain the uniform of business-----and funerals. Not such a hopeless dystopia after all. Again, while life is manageable for the resourceful, the real drama is found in the quietly desperate struggle of the 3 characters for which each "episode" is named. As their fates are revealed, we come to realize that there is little reason for us to envy the "young ones" and their future in the desolate land whose only dependable crops are envy, manipulation and revenge.

This is a very dismal look at a future where water becomes an extremely hard to get and valuable commodity. It's about a father and brother and sister striving to get enough to live on. The brother is sort of a good kid who finds out something horrible and has to act on it. Elle Fanning (plays the sister) is a girl coming of age who wants little more than to get out of the farm with her boyfriend who eventually becomes her husband. Her part is strong in the beginning but becomes just a background character near the movie middle. There isn't much SciFi except for a robot pack mule who carries their stuff around. It becomes integral to the story though.This is almost all about the soap opera of their lives and is very very slow to bring the plot to fruition. There is a certain satisfaction in the ending although you'll spend a good time getting there.I'm on the fence about this one. The acting of the cast was pretty spot on. If your an Elle Fanning fan you'll be disappointed at how minor her role becomes. If you are looking for SciFi, you won't get much here. If you like soap operas and endless character development then this ones for you. If you like dismal, no hope, kind of end of the world scenarios, this might interest you. As I said before, I found the ending somewhat satisfying but probably wouldn't have watched it knowing what I know now.

The movie is in three parts, and moves slowly. But in doing so, one gets to really understand the characters and the challenges they face. Part one is of the father Ernest Holm, who wants to eke out the harsh existence with the dream of getting water for his farm. He has a son Jerome and a daughter Mary, and a quadriplegic wife, who may have gotten that way in a drunken auto accident. A neighboring farm has a younger man, Flem Lever, who is in love with Mary, which sets up tensions. Part one ends with the death of Ernest, and Part two centers on the life of Flem, who manages to get water for the farm, expands it to a flourishing 20,000 irrigated acres and marries Mary. But there is a hidden secret. In Part three, it is Jerome’s turn, and Jerome turns out to be, while young, a very cold and calculating person once he found out Flem’s secret.The movie shows a world where water is extremely scarce, allocated not according to need but of influence, and the characters are forced to cope with a situation that is very grim at times. The movie is very low keyed, not full of special effects, but of people trying to make the best for themselves. The movie is not fast paced and if you watch it in small segments, it does not detract from enjoying the movie.

5 stars for a very interesting and different kind of post apocalyptic movie. No zombies, but a strong story of hardship, family love and loyalty and the struggles they face to survive in a world with little to no water. Acting is very good, scenery dry, very dry and storyline keeps you interested in this family. Loved the robot mule and was glad when he was brought back into the story.

Fresh semi apocalyptic and probably more possible than other doomsday scenarios. The Google Donkey did it for me. That thing had to cost several million to produce and I could tel there was no CGI in the entire movie, It seems so many movies are either over the top, or too complex, with too many loose ends, or simply cheap with bad plots. This one was easy enough to follow and although there are no great moments, it is better than most the mechanical donkey gave it a sophistication you don't find in most low budget films.Also there is something interesting in water being the ultimate commodity. Many films use water scarcity as a major part of the plots. Watching this film gives a satisfaction of knowing all these needs are at hand and always will be..

In einer Prä-"Mad-Max"- Welt haben Klimawandel und Konflikte die Zivilisation nahe an den Abgrund getrieben. Wasser ist ein seltsenes Gut und somit das neue Eröl.In dieser Welt versucht Ernest Holm (Michael Shannon) seine beiden Kinder durchzubringen. Während sich sein Sohn Jerome (Odi Smit-McPhee) anpasst und versucht zu helfen, rebelliert die Tochter (Elle Fanning) indem sie mit dem Sohn (Nicolas Hoult) eines Großfarmers anbändelt. Als er zu Tode kommt, nistet sich der sofort auf der Farm ein. Als Jerome aber erfährt wie sein Vater zu Tode kam, sucht er Gerechtigkeit.Prä-"Mad-Max" ergibt sich aus der Tatsache, dass es noch eine Regierung gibt und die meisten Leute sich noch "normal" verhalten. Autos sind Hybrid, Roboter normale Hilfsmittel. Doch die meiste Infrastruktur ist bestenfalls reparaturbedürftig. Alles soll wohl an die Pionierzeit des Westens erinnern und ein bisschen das Westerngenre ansprechen. Allerdings scheitert der Film an der dünnen Story, die rund um die Hauptcharaktere gesponnen wurde. Das Finale ist vorhersehbar und unspektakulär.Der Film wollte sich von "Mad Max" durch seine Ruhe klar distanzieren. Doch die Ruhe des Films ist einschläfernd nervtötend und entzieht dem Film die gesamte Seele. Schade

On peut facilement être séduit par ce film dont le cadre se passe dans un proche futur et qui plante un décors désertique autour de protagonistes angoissés par la possession d'eau pour leurs cultures. On peut aussi être séduit par le petit côté technologique de la fameuse mule robotisée (qui fait beaucoup moins de bruit que la réelle !). Au-delà de cela, ce film s'apparente à un western très classique sur fond de revanche et de vengeance. Prendre ce film pour un film de SF est de trop et c'est un peu comme cela qu'il est présenté. Or, c'est une étude de moeurs sur les passions, la défense du territoire, l'amour, la vengeance. Attention, dans ce cadre-là, ce film tient toutes ses promesses avec des caractères bien trempés joués par des acteurs au top. La mise en scène est classique, les effets spéciaux relativement discrets. Tout l'intérêt est focalisé sur la profondeur psychologique des personnages, et en l'espèce, les clair-obscurs sont légion.

draußen in der Wüste passieren seltsame Dinge,angefangen mit dem plötzlichen Tod von Ernest Holm.Mit the "Young Ones" präsentiert Jake Paltrow einen spannenden,erfrischend eigenständigen Film in einer Retro-Future Mischung.Ein Endzeitthriller in einer MadMaxUmgebung, der jedoch ohne Action auskommt.Dafür überzeugt der Streifen viel mehr durch Tiefe, Handlung und Stimmung.In einer kargen Wüstenlandschaft, in der Wasser das größte Gut ist, wird der Zuschauer Zeuge eines Familiendramas um das kühle Nass.Wie weit würdest du gehen um deine Ziele zu erreichen?Der kleine Cast,angeführt von Michael Shonnon (General Zod,The Icemann) spielt durchweg überzeugend und eindringlich. Die wenigen handelnden Personen und seltenen Dialoge unterstreichen das karge,trostlose Stimmungsbild der gesamten Landschaft.Die optische Inszenierung rundet dieses Bild ab.Der Regisseur mischt kleine SciFi-Elemente (zb Transportmaschinen "Shadows", Holm's Frau) wirkungsvoll mit RetroStyle (zb die Werkstatt in der Stadt sieht völlig veraltet aus, die hintergründige Musikuntermalung).Jetzt wo ich dass schreibe, fällt mir auf, dass es wirklich schwierig ist den Film zu katalogisieren.Ich würde ihn als völlig eigenständig beschreiben.Gemischt aus so vielen Elementen wie Sci-Fi, Western,Endzeitthriller und Rachedrama, gelingt in meinen Augen ein überraschend starkes Werk mit "individuellem"Charakter.

Ach du heiliger Mad Max - Endzeit.....Post-Apokalypse....Dystopie....Anti-Utopie....all das sind Begriffe, die mir durch den Kopf schießen, wenn ich mir Klappentexte wie bei "The Young Ones" durchlese bzw. derartige Trailer sehe!Tja...und wie (leider leider leider!!!) auch hier: WEIT GEFEHLT!!!Der vorliegende Film ist nichts anderes als eine Familien-Rache-Saga! Das war's! Ehrlich, nichts anderes!!! Das Setting mag in der (näheren) Zukunft angesiedelt und trostlos endzeitlich gestaltet sein. Gut - meinetwegen!!Herrje - dieser Film hätte auch am Hofe Ludwig des Vierzehnten, der Shilo-Ranch im Wilden Westen oder bei Familie Hempelmann in Castrop-Rauxel im Jahr 1978 spielen können!Das gesamte Endzeit-Setting hat schlicht und ergreifend ÜBERHAUPT keinen Einfluss auf den Film, die Handlung, die Figuren, deren Motivation - auf GAR NIX!!!Wieso macht man sich denn um alles in der Welt die Mühe, einen Film aufwendig in so eine Zeit zu transportieren, wenn man eine derart banale Handlung genauso im Hinterhof der Produktionsfirma im Jahr 2014 hätte spielen lassen können?? Das ergibt nicht den allerkleinsten Sinn!! Dementsprechend nebensächlich ist daher auch die gesamte "Endzeit"-Aufmachung - und das ist leider mehr als ärgerlich, wenn man sich auf einen "Endzeit"-Film freut, der aber allenfalls rein technisch vielleicht einer ist, aber nicht Handlungsmäßig!!!Und um gegenteiligen Ansichten auszuhebeln: Jaaaa, ich habe den Film verstanden! Und nein, ich sehe mir nicht nur "Fast&Furious" an. Und nein - so kompliziert ist dieser Film weiß Gott nicht, als dass man den jetzt großartig "missverstehen" könnte!Fazit: Extrem ärgerlich! Wer einen Endzeitfilm sucht, der sollte lieber George Millers Klassiker rauskramen oder Book of Eli, oder Waterworld, oder The Road, meinetwegen sogar "I am Legend" oder von mir aus auch den "Postman" - aber ganz sicher nicht dieses Machwerk. Kann ich Gwyneth Paltrow schon nicht besonders leiden, so hat ihr jüngerer Bruder weiß Gott auch nicht dazu begetragen, den Sympathiegrad dieser Familie in meinen Augen zu steigern!Bloß die Finger davon lassen - und wer denn partout nicht auf mich hören will, der sollte seinem Geldbeutel wenigstens zuliebe dieses Teil allenfalls gebraucht erwerben oder sich ausleihen!2 Sterne auch nur deshalb, weil es ja noch so einen Dreck wie "Auschwitz" von Uwe Boll gibt. Von der Wertung her hätte er allenfalls 1,5 Sterne verdient!!
