Hi Kurt,The speakers come stock, with a blue faceplate.They include a black faceplate with your purchase. This is very cool option to haveð¶

Q: the amount of hiss in silence, depends on the volume control?

no. the hiss does not depend on volume control. it stays the same. the hiss is completely in-audible when playing audio. you can not hear it or even make a distinction of it. even in very quiet audio files or pauses between tracks. the only time I notice it is right when powering on. I've been using these for 4 years and much prefer them over my JBL LSR 308. They surprisingly sound even clearer than the Adam Audio monitors my friend owns.

Probably, but I keep mine really high volume. There is a knob on the back of each you can turn and it will lower the hiss and overall volume, also use grounded cables to lower the hiss. Only noticable in silence and no audio playing.

Q: if you do not turn off the monitor with the power button on the monitor. and turn off the power through the surge protector. Is there cotton?

I have been turning mine off and on through a furman power conditioner (surge protector) for the past 4 years with no issue. without touching the power switch on the back off speaker.
