Good Book
I read Seeing Red written by Kathryn Erskine. It was published by Scholastic Press, on September 24, 2013. I think that Seeing Red is a good book for 10-14 year olds to read. It is entertaining, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. There is also strong friendships that keep the book entertaining. I really enjoyed this book, and am happy I chose to read it!Seeing Red takes place in Rocky Gap, Virginia. There are four main characters in the book. First, Red Porter, a 12 year old red headed boy whose father just died. Red builds a strong bond with his friends Miss Georgia and Rosie throughout the book. Sadly Red’s friendship with his childhood friend, Thomas fades. Miss Georgia is an elderly black woman who is like a grandmother to Red. Whenever Red needs someone to talk to he always goes to her. Red’s best friend, Rosie, is one of the sweetest people in the town everyone loves her, but not everyone loves her father. Her father, Mr. Dunlop, is mean to his wife, beats his son Darrell, and he speaks horribly to Rosie and sometimes even hits her. The last character is an African American, Thomas, is a longtime friend of Red, but sadly their friendship fades throughout the book. Thomas and Red used to be best friends, but Thomas is two years older than Red, and has goals in life that involves him moving to D.C. The book starts right after Red’s father dies. Red’s mother wants to move the family to Ohio. Red doesn't want to move because his friends are like his family. They helped him get through his father's death. To keep the family from moving Red gets involved with the neighborhood gang, the “Brotherhood”. To prove his loyalty to the gang Red has to do some things that the KKK does like burning a cross. When Red burns the cross he thinks no one is watching, but the Brotherhood had a plan. They brought Thomas out from dark after Red burns the cross. After that night, Thomas doesn’t want to speak to Red anymore. School starts up again and Red gets in a fight. His punishment is to pack up the shop for the move. While cleaning out the shop Red finds something very interesting, a map. The map may lead to where the Freedom Church once stood. This church was started by Miss Georgia’s great grand daddy who was murdered soon after the the church opened. The church was burned down after that, and no one knows where it once stood or who killed Miss Georgia’s great grand daddy. The only thing that was left from the fire was a flat rock that was used as an altar. The church was built around this altar. Red is determined to find the church for Miss Georgia. I said in the beginning of the review that it is very entertaining, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. For example, in the book there are lots of questions that you have as you are reading. You have questions such as… Will Red find where the church once stood? Will he end up moving to Ohio? Can Red fix Thomas’s and his friendship? Who was really behind Miss Georgia’s great grand daddy’s murder? And why was he murdered? I also said that the book has strong friendships that keep you entertained. For example, Red is friends with his father’s assistant at the auto shop, Beau. This is friendship throughout the story that has twists and turns, and keeps you reading the book. You keep reading the book because you want to see if these friendships will last, and how they play a part in Red’s life. Kathryn Erskine has also written many other books such as Mockingbird, The Absolute Value of Mike, and Quaking. Mockingbird won the National Book Award, Quaking was the ALA Top Ten Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, and the Absolute Value of Mike was an Amazon Best Book and ALA Notable Book. She is an amazing author with a lot of talent.Seeing Red is a great book! It keeps you on the edge of your seat. It was written by a great author with a lot of talent. I would rate this book a four, because it was very entertaining, but got a little boring during some parts. Overall, it was a good read, and I am happy I read it.

Seeing Red Review
The title of my book for my book review is Seeing Red by Kathryn Erskine. Seeing Red is published by Scholastic Press on September 24 2013. I feel that Seeing Red is a fantastic books and I recommend to everyone! It has a lot of excitement and it really catches your attention. I feel that Kathryn Erskine is a great author because her books give lessons to learn and to understand. Her phrasing in the book is understandable and her books always catches my attention. She tells the story by describing the scenery, characters, and the setting and plot.Seeing Red is a fiction book about a boy named Red Porter, whose father died. Red and his father ran a shop together and were very close. That was who Red looked up to. His father was his idol and Red wanted to be just like him. One day Red finds out that his family is moving to Ohio. Red was very upset because that would mean he would have to leave his shop. The shop he worked at with his daddy. That’s where Red had all of his memories and he was not ready to leave. Red had to think of a plan if he wanted to keep his family from moving. He decided to start cleaning out his father's desk and pack everything up. Red is throwing everything out until he sees this old paper sitting in the desk. He opens it and sees that it was a drawing of his dad's. He wondered what the map was but when he looked harder and realized that it was a picture of the Freedom Church. A church that was burned down. He also noticed how there was a person lying dead on the ground next to the church and the number three written in various places. He didn’t understand what any of this meant so he asked Miss Georgia. When she told him the background story of what she knew, he tried to find the spot of the Freedom Church so he could figure the rest of the mystery out. When he thinks he solved the mystery, he tells Miss Georgia about it and that he apologized for what happened in the past with their families. There were a lot of main characters in this book. There is Red Porter who is tries to overcome some family decisions so he can still be in his daddy’s presence. With the help of some friends he accomplishes a goal he has. In this book there is a girl named Rosie Dunlop who becomes close friends with Red. Rosie has a cruel dad who does not like the Porter family from a fude a long time ago. He is the father that treats Rosie like a slave instead of a daughter. Rosie works for her dad and has to deal with a bully of a brother also. When her dad finds out that she is hanging with a Porter he hurts her even more. There is also Miss Georgia who is an old lady who is a friend of Red. She helps Red solve a mystery. With some health problems down the rode her and Red accomplish a goal even when something happens to her. This book was set in 1972 at Red Porters family business. The plot of this book is when Red finds a letter that could change his family's legacy and change so much of his friendship and his life.I feel that Red had a lot of decisions to make. He didn’t want to move because he didn’t want to leave what made him happy. When red found the map in his dad’s desk I thought it was interesting on what the picture represented. This book is a great book because even though I would prefer doing a sport than reading I did not want to put this book down. I read it in one day. This book had sadness and excitement and anger. I loved when Red was talking to Miss Georgia to find where the church was and what the picture meant. Seeing Red sounded interesting when my teacher read the description. I wanted to know more about When red needs to pick the right or wrong path with his “friends” I feel that this book gives a great life lesson, how to choose wrong from right and how to make right choices. In conclusion I feel that Seeing Red is a wonderful book that any more would enjoy to read. This book should be recommended for anyone older than 10. I feel that the language is very clear just some words are hard to understand and compliance. Even though this book is large I really enjoyed it a lot. I also am happy because Red makes a friend even though there families don’t like each other. Red sticks up for what he believes in and never quits.

Excellent read.
I found this book to be a beautiful study of a child's grief and the discovery that the world he thought he knew was not all that it seemed to be. I shall definitely read more by this author.
