All killer, no filler
Great show. All the main cast are excellent with Timothy Oliphant's wry insouciance as US Marshall Raylan Givens and Walton Goggins' edgy performance as the psychopathic Boyd Crowther being particularly oustanding. To be honest, it was largely Goggins' presence that eventually persuaded me to buy the set, having watched him steal so many scenes in the also excellent 'The Shield.' He has an amazing, perhaps more accurately an alarming screen presence. He exudes a kind of pent-up fury, especially from his eyes. You genuinely have no idea what he's about to do a lot of the time, you just know that anyone in the vicinity is liable to be in extreme danger should he erupt. Timothy Oliphant's wisecracking portrayal provides exactly the right foil for Goggins in all the scenes they share, of which I'm pleased to say there are many.Another standout character is Raylan's boss, who displays a great line in exasperated, sardonic humour whilst clearly really liking Raylan, depsite all the often lethal trouble he both attracts and causes. The various women in Raylan's life - well, he's quite a handsome devil - are uniformly well played, given a lot to do and are often capable of kicking ass just as much as any of the male leads, which is refreshing to see. Ava, the put-upon but fighting back ex-girlfriend of Raylan, then girlfriend of Boyd, is a particularly well fleshed out role played with terrific style by the excellent Joelle Carter.Justified is set in and around Harlan County, Kentucky. If this show is anything to go by, it's not a place I'd like to live, the population consisting of more than the usual number of bootleggers, pimps, drug dealers, car thieves, religious crazies, possible cannibals and general all round good old boy psycho-killers. With this many potential felons, miscreants and reprobates, there is a lot of violence in the show, some of it quite graphic. In theory, as a lifelong pacifist, I guess I should have a problem with that. That I don't is partly down to the fact that said violence pretty much always has bad consequences for someone, usually very bad. The other reason is that even the most morally dubious characters tend to be portrayed with such charm, gusto and humour, and the dialogue is so witty and so well written, that it carries you along for the ride, sometimes despite your better judgement. The quality of the writing is another outstanding feature of the show. The whole thing is based on a short story called 'Fire in the Hole' by American legend, Elmore Leonard, and the writers famously all wore wristbands bearing the letters WWED, standing for 'What Would Elmore Do?' If ever they were stuck for a line or an idea, they'd ask themselves or each other that question. They answer it extremely well, perfectly capturing Leonard's biting put-downs and witty comebacks. The dialogue between characters is a real joy in this show in a way that few other shows can equal. As the Washington Post puts it, "all killer, no filler." Example: in response to a bad guy's complaint after being shot, Raylan says, “Hell, if you wanted me to shoot you in the front, you shoulda run toward me.” Or how about Raylan's question to another felon, "You the type of fella that walks under a flock of birds and is surprised when he ends up with shit on his face?" Even fairly minor characters get lines like "I’m going to need Google Translate on my phone if I’m going to keep talking to you." Love it!I'm so glad I held off watching this show on tv. The box set enables my kids (24 and 25) and I to watch uninterrupted by dumb adverts for junk we don't want and to follow story arcs spread across several episodes to their conclusion over one or two nights. Perfect! One final Raylan quote, just to make clear what kind of a US Marshall it is we're dealing with here: "I'll kill four of you before you even clear your weapons, and I'll take my chances with the other two. And you see this star? That's gonna make it legal." And he smiles under the brim of his white stetson hat ...

HAD TO GET THE WHOLE SET TO WATCH IT ALL AGAIN
I watched it when each of the seasons was first put out but want to watch it all again years later as the whole lot was so good, with that great laid-back Southern States 'we-do-stuff-our-own-way' vibe running through it from stem to stern. In fact it is probably the coolest series about a cop dealing with ( but never alienating himself from ) the community that has ever been made. He let's sleeping dogs lie and only sorts out the ones that rub the back-woods status quo up the wrong way. The sort of home-grown cop that the harmlessly illicit law breakers know won't bother them 'cos that's the way it is. He has to feel 'justified' within his own conscience about what may be needed to be done before he's prepared to straighten things out, and that is cool.Eamonn

One of the best tv series I have ever seen!
What a brilliant show this is! How did I miss it when it first aired? Was I under a rock? Regardless, I discovered this on Sky Box Sets and got totally hooked, only for the series to expire when I was part way through season 2!! It was a no brainer for me, straight to Amazon and purchase the dvd's so I could keep watching! Excellent storylines, excellent acting and some seriously good characters - Raylan of course is the main character and I challenge anybody not to think he is one cool cowboy (lawman really, but he wears a cowboy hat), Boyd, for all his wrong doings, is a really likeable person and his banter with Raylan is wonderful, you can see their real life friendship shining through, but for me, the unsung hero is Art, Raylan's boss, who comes out with some absolute pearlers! The guy has wonderful comic timing and genuinely has some of the best lines in the show! I see no point me going into great detail as to what the show is about, Wikipedia is there for that, but this box set is great, the quality is great, and all the extras make it a series well worth owning.

excellent series
Excellent crime drama set in Kentucky. Raylan is transferred to his hometown, and is soon busy handling a whole load of cases that quite often seem to involve Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins). The stories are quite well written and there is both plenty of action and humour in every episode. Walton Goggins is absoultely brilliant as Boyd Crowder and is in my opinion the true star of this series. If you like shows like The Shield and Sons of Anarchy, you will like justified. Great value for money
