Quite good but several areas need improvement
It's as good as any other book out there and will give you a good basis on which to improve. But it's not without its faults.- There are too many mistakes. It doesn't look like this book was properly copy edited. In a book of this type there should not be ANY mistakes.- The "imitated pronunciation" is a waste of space. It's not easy to read and it doesn't come anywhere near the correct pronunciation unless perhaps you have the very English accent (God knows from where) the author had in mind when she wrote it. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't do it for absolutely every Spanish word and expression in the first few chapters. Just get rid and lighten the book.- On a technical note, the book teaches a non-standard practice known as "leismo" (look it up). Though accepted in many areas in Spain, it's still not standard.- If you've just taught the reader that "suelo" means "I usually", don't then use "generalmente" for the same thing in the corresponding exercise. That's just one example of several and it is very annoying.- Make the damn book tougher. Maybe the publishers are so confident you'll speak Spanish like a true native in three months that they don't expect you'll ever open the book again. I've been through it twice, once when I was a novice and once a year later for revision, and its now in about four pieces, each with the pages falling out.

Hugo Beginner's Spanish
Believe it or not it is possible to learn the basics of Spanish in 3 months. The book (with CDs) enable you to make rapid progress. It does require 1-2 hours a day which is exactly what I gave it. There is no verbiage here - everything in the book is essential so you have to read the book carefully and follow the study plan. This is not an easy no effort in 5 minutes course that leads nowhere. I went to Spain able to speak the language, although it did take a bit of effort to piece sentences together. The Spanish I met were very patient! Imagine going to evening classes and spending a year doing the basics - not for me. I am now going to revise again and then use the Hugo Advanced course. Beginner's course is to be recommended!

Really useful for a complete beginner!
I started teaching myself Spanish during lockdown and found this book to be incredibly helpful for learning the grammar basics while picking up some new vocab along the way. There are clear explanations of each concept along with plenty of examples and exercises to complete.

Only for the language literate
A small book that aims high is bound to be a steep climb for someone who has never studied a foreign language before. I already spoke French and Italian, so I was familiar with the grammatical structure, but the rapid progression means it is probably not suitable for anyone who is tackling a foreign language for the first time. Later editions by authors other than Isabel Cisneros may well be an improvement.

A well-tried language learning method
Starting from scratch learning Spanish I began with the Michel Thomas 8 hours course in order to get a sense of the language, the intonation and pronunciation etc. Then I turned to this Hugo method which provides a systematic introduction to the essential grammar of the language, with many exercises and examples. My aim is to acquire a sound knowledge of the language and this method works for me. If the intention is to learn useful phrases as a tourist there are plenty of simpler and quicker methods, particularly web based.

Basic Quick Learning
I purchased this item as i have spanish friends that live in Spain/Italy and was tired of not being able to communicate every time i went to visit (usually once a year) - and also because i really do want to learn another language. The book came quickly and is very easy to use. I find that you have to really keep at it (preferably half an hour on a daily basis) and keep refreshing the info learnt in order for it to be productive, but genuinely believe that you could be fluent within a year. My one gripe is with the pronounciation. Although the book does it in a way that shows you how to pronounce the word, it would be better to have an accompanying tape/cd to actually hear it for yourself as at times i tried to say something in Spanish and was told id pronounced it wrong - sometimes making you feel a little disheartened lol. The best way to learn truely is to visit the country for a couple months but if thats not possible or practical and you dont have the money to enroll on a course, then this is the next best thing.
