Review on Baofeng UV-17R. Ham radio. The only problem that I have had is that the most current CHIRP software will not work with this radio yet (Dec27-2023), and I could not get the baofeng software to work either. I was able to program repeaters into the radio by hand. I have not tried the seek function to get frequency and tones from repeaters yet. It is a sturdy radio. The display screen will automatically time out and go dark unless you set it to be on all of the time. Just hit a function key to light the screen back up. I wish the screen was always visible without a back light.I am using a BTECH radio programming cable with my laptop, which allows the chirp software to connect to the radio. The connection icon on the radio lit up when I tried to download the radio settings to my computer, so I know its talking to it. The chirp software gave an error message that read that it could not find the data that it needed. I suspect that CHIRP will eventually update for this specific radio.January 11, 2024 Update. After several attempts to try and get this radio to work with the CHIRP software updates, I have had no luck in getting the radio to sync with CHIRP. I have used CHIRP software before on other radios with success, so I know how to use the software to program radios. I have been able to program two repeaters into the radio by hand, so I know that the radio can be programmed that way. This is disappointing because I don't want to program all of the repeaters in my area by hand.

I bought a bunch of Baofeng radios this winter and I can tell you that this is one of the most polished for the money. It comes with a charging cradle, a sturdy belt clip, and a good antenna. I wouldn't say it's quite as solid as my Yaesu VX7 but at 1/10th the price, this is an amazing deal.

I have several uv-5r’s they work great and I really like all the other baofeng radios I have bought. This one however is terrible it’s hard to see the screen especially in the sun, I can’t seem to save any channels, and most importantly you can not talk on frs frequencies which is the frequency that every other handheld radio I have communicates on. So this radio is basically useless to me.It’s also vary large and has terrible battery life. And not easy to use at all. If you’re looking for a radio like this the uv-5r is the one you want.

Its a solid little radio, just keep in mind it as of the publishing of this is locked to ham only. I am a ham operator so no worries there. But i use gmrs with my family and so far no one has figured out how to unlock that band.

Radio came delivered very quickly. Got the Nagoya antenna in the same box! Started to try and program it from a laptop but that made for some problems. Can’t establish labels by programming through the keypad though. I will say that this may not be a great candidate for a first radio but if you know how program by hand, you should be ok! Turn the screen light to always on and you will probably be very happy with this HT! Solid, feels good in the hands, seems well built! Battery that came with it doesn’t have a charging port but they do make them so I would recommend getting one at some point. I commute 2 hours each way and the stock battery does the job but for longer durations and redundancy, I would get one at least. The package didn’t come with a hand speaker/mic but it takes a typical Kenwood style. Definitely a good buy!

The radio seems good, great display. My problem is that Chirp and Baofeng programming software do not work. After spending a lot of time trying I programed another model Baofeng radio using the same cable and Chirp. It instantly worked. The cable was fully seated and instructions followed. I have experience using Chirp with 3 brands of radios and several models. Maybe future releases of software will address the problem. I was ready to try the Tidradio wireless interface and software. But it does not support any of the Baofeng model 17's. Tidradio told me that if enough interest is seen they will support the model 17's.

I accidentally ordered this Baofeng UV-17, but thought I'd try it out as long as it had arrived. It seemed to work fine, but as all Baofeng HT's seem to be, the programming via front panel is pretty clunky, but fine if yuou aren't planning to do much altering of CTCSS, etc. Programming via Chirp was fine. It wasn't the model I had planned to order (UV-21), so I returned it after resetting to factory defaults. Amazon Prime Return process made that painless as always.

This review is the the Baofeng UV-17R. There are a number of varieties of the 17R out there, so be careful what you are ordering. This version does not operate on GMRS frequencies.This is a FCC approved version of the UV-5R. The available frequencies are locked in firmware so the jailbreak tricks will not work. It is almost twice the size of the UV-5R and feels comfortable in the hand. The buttons are larger and easier to press with the fingers. The color screen is a big improvement but it is somewhat difficult to see outdoors. I like the 2 bright LED lights on the bottom. The manual is an improvement on the UV-5R manual. The menu structure is similar to the UV-5R but the menu numbers are different.My radio arrived 2 days earlier than the scheduled delivery. The UV-17R is a great radio at this low price point.
