Not fit for intended purpose
The design of this thermometer guarantees that it will fail. Mine did fail, and after it went kaput, I contacted Taylor and was told, despite what you read in the product description, that this product can NOT be used in a barbecue.Read on.I purchased this as a gift, and we used it for the Christmas turkey. Unfortunately, the unit kept turning itself off after thirty minutes, even though the temperature in the turkey was constantly increasing (it is only supposed to turn off if the temperature doesn't change over a thirty minute period). This ruins the whole concept of having a pager that will alert you when the temperature is getting close to the desired end temperature, and also beep again when it reaches final temperature. So, the first strike against this product is that it cannot be reliably used for anything that takes longer than thirty minutes to cook.Next, the temperature reading went up and down during cooking. This, of course, was not really happening because a large turkey does not get colder in a 350 degree oven. Why did this happen? Well, I read in the reviews here on Amazon, the response from the engineer at Taylor. I read this BEFORE I used the thermometer, and I knew that several other reviewers had the temperature vary considerably, and that the "solution" given by the Taylor engineer was to make sure the probe was fully inserted. So, that's what I did. For our turkey, I inserted the probe all the way down into the breast, away from the bone, all the way up to the large bend in the probe. However, the real killer, and the thing that ultimately caused the unit to fail and makes it completely unfit for its intended purpose, is that it cannot be used in the BBQ. Yes, you read that correctly. Again, I read the cautions from the Taylor engineer about making sure the probe wire goes through a hole in the BBQ and is not crimped by the hot lid. I did EXACTLY as he advised, "snaking" the the wire through a hole. It was not crimped in any way whatsoever. However, the probe wire melted, after just six minutes, at the point where it went through the hole. Now here is where it gets interesting. After the unit failed, I called the Taylor service line. The woman I spoke to was very helpful, knowledgeable, courteous, and nice. Taylor gets an A+ for good customer service. She could not have been any better. I told her my story, and she then said: "that thermometer is not intended for use in a BBQ." I then asked, thinking I had missed something: "Do the instructions make any reference to this, or are there any warnings or cautions on the box or anywhere else?" Her answer was no. What's more, I then returned to this Amazon page where the description states: "For use in oven or on barbecue or smoker."So, the whole concept of this product is to let you tell, at a distance, whether something you are cooking has reached the proper temperature. The BBQ is the one obvious place where this would be useful. However, it cannot be used in the BBQ -- even when following the advice given by one of the people who designed it -- without destroying the unit.Thankfully, Amazon has a great return policy. However, Amazon should simply not carry this product because ultimately they will get a lot of returns. One final thing. I purchased this because of the reviews at America's Test Kitchen/Cook's Illustrated. I am becoming very concerned about whether their testers are really doing the testing they claim to be doing or, potentially more disturbing, are being biased or influenced by certain manufacturers. I am now viewing all reviews from this source with a certain suspicion.I hope this helps!!

Can't easily get replacement probes
***UPDATE***Somehow the silicone coated cable got a tiny melted spot while broiling and it no longer works. I've always been careful to keep the cable out of harm's way. I called Taylor and was told they don't sell replacements probes for this particular model. I found two places online that sell them and in both cases the cost with shipping would have been around $20, almost what I paid for the whole unit. As soon as the grill comes out for summer I'll be shopping for a different model that I can get replacement probes for if needed.***ORIGINAL REVIEW***Had it for a month and it's been great so far. I've used it on steaks, chicken, turkey and Salmon and they all turned out just right. I had a situation where I bought a frozen pie and when I got it home it was actually defrosted inside so the cooking time listed on the box was useless. The thermometer saved the day.The main unit has magnets to stick it to the oven but they aren't quite strong enough to keep from tilting and creeping downward so I have to rest it on the countertop. That's why I downgraded to 4 stars.I'm thankful that other reviewers have pointed out how you need to insert the probe at least 1.5 inches into the food and that you need to treat the very thin wire with care. Appearantly the wire/probe is the achilies heal of all brands of electronic oven thermometers. As thin as the wire is on this thing, I can see why. Both the main unit and the remote beep frequently to signal incremental progress once you get within 20 degrees of done. The beep patterns are confusing to me, so I just listen for the continuous beeping which indicates temperature is reached. The frequent beeps can get annoying. All in all a great addition to my kitchen and something I'll use a lot.

This is the second one of these I've owned. The first one I had, was given to me as a gift. Eventually, the thermal probe attachment gave out due to fraying and became unusable as the thermometer would only display "LL" (no temperature detected) on the display. So, I started to research the cost of replacement probes and found out they cost just as much as a brand new themometer! So, off to Amazon I went and picked up a brand new one of these little cook's helpers. The design of the units are smooth and sleek and can take one hell of a beating. (I'm a chef. It happens.) The timer alerts are loud and sound like a smoke detector (Good for those of you who are hearing impaired. Also, if you get smoke when cooking...just order in for the night and give up on being the next top chef), the vibrating remote module is a plus, it's nearly infinitely programmable and works exactly as advertised. The battery life is insane as well as by the time I wore out the first probe, the batteries that came with it were just THEN starting to drain down.Long story short, this is a staple item to have in any kitchen. The probe can be left inside the oven, inserted into your handiwork, complete with the attachment cable. If you don't have one of these then you are a fool. It will last you an insanely long time.

Termometro
Lamentablemente el termometro funciono un día. Otro día que se quiso usar, empezo a fallar. Mostraba todos los caracteres de la pantalla y mo daba la temperatura.
