I love the cover of this book! The author does a great job of explaining the wide-ranging benefits that can come from keeping goats. This book is systematically organized with a thorough table of contents, naturally progressing from goat breeds, sheltering and feeding goats, to healthcare, breeding, and milking, along with numerous other important goat-related topics.The author makes good use of photos to illustrate the variety of goat breeds. The chapter summaries are well done. There are also some good checklists and additional resources at the end of the book. I’m a numbers person, and would have found it helpful if the author provided some summary charts of the overall expected set up and operating costs of care for one or more goats (perhaps using a common example of a single or pair of goats). Overall, this is an enjoyable, informative, and practical book on keeping goats.

Great information for beginners

Years ago in Africa I saw many of the residents herding goats and I also ate goat meat which wasn't bad at all. So in my years of retirement I have thought of raising animals, goats were one of the ones I thought about raising. But after reading this book I think raising animals calls for a greater commitment than I can give. The expense is another question, especially vet fees, inoculation, testing etc. Nor can feed be said to be cheap for you'll always have to buy some. So this book kept me from getting in over my head. I'll stick to watching the Discovery Channel.

This is a good book with basic information. Nothing really breed specific, so you might want to get a book on that as well.

One of the best things about reviewing is that you have the opportunity to read books you would not typically read. I have no plans to become a goat farmer (though the goats pictured are mighty cute), but I cannot imagine a better book for the reader who has such plans. The author is an experienced goat farmer who offers practical advice about any aspect of raising goats imaginable. And his love of his animals and the self-sufficiency they provide him and his family are obvious.

Goats are great animals, and there are lots of reasons to enjoy keeping them. This book is the perfect place to start if you've ever been curious about raising goats; it covers the different breeds, how to provide for them with shelter and fencing, what kinds of foods they need, and all sorts of other things. Plenty of people have backyard vegetable gardens, but you could be the first person in your neighborhood with a backyard goat garden!

I am considering adopting pet goats. This book's got you covered. It explains in simple language how to raise happy, healthy goats. Well written and organized, it is a comprehensive resource that teaches you everything you need to know. I enjoyed reading it and I'm excited to get my goats. Highly recommend.
