Bog oak is ancient timber which has decayed and been preserved over thousands of years. It usually comes in a brown or black colour, depending on the location and depth it has been excavated. In recent times, this material has been removed for various purposes, mostly for peat used for burning. Years ago it was excavated by hand before machinery was introduced and many people around the shores of Lough Neagh were involved in some way with this activity. This item is a fitting tribute to those who excavated this material, now created and crafted using genuine Irish turf, from some of Europes oldest boglands.
