The Music of Black Americans: A History

Fine, Pages Missing in my Copy
This book is alright, it provides a good background to the history of African-American music though the passages can be a little dense at times. My main beef is that there are pages missing from my copy, which appear to have simply been skipped -- they were not removed nor torn out. Specifically pages 337-340 are not present. I'm disappointed by this as I would not have known this until reading halfway through the book (which I have) by which point the return window had already closed. Oh well.

Great book, great service
This book is an interesting academic read. It's not too academic where it's bothersome or too slow. It's well written in that it's both scholarly and enjoyable to read. This book is important for the jazz musician to understand the pre jazz African roots that influenced what would become jazz.

Perfect as an introduction and an anthology
This book is the most developed about african-american music. My interest is in spirituals and the reading of this book is the best way to start a research.
