More efficient than stringing seed beads by hand, just
I’ve always been curious about bead spinners but this is the first chance I have had to test drive one. It did not come with instructions and I struggled a little to understand those on the Amazon product page, probably because I had expected the mechanism to be more complicated than it is. Basically you have a small wooden bowl which sits on a stand, allowing it to rotate. In the middle of the bowl is a metal spindle to manually turn it. The other main component is a sort of long, fine, flexible needle with a hooked end. You thread the needle, pour some beads into the bowl, pop the point of the needles into the bowl and hold it in place with one hand, using the other to rotate the bowl. As it spins and the beads move around, they will begin to gradually collect on the hooked end of the needle, and you simply move them up onto the thread and carry on until it is the length you want. It’s very simple but only moderately efficient. I found I rarely got more than 3, or occasionally 4, beads onto the needle in one go and had to keep moving them up to make room for more. That being said, it was much less fiddly than trying to thread a similar quantity of small beads individually and probably faster too. For £15.99 at time of review, you get the rotating bowl and base, 2 x different sized hooked needles, a needle threader, a couple of different threading materials, 3 x small packs of beads (white, black, and pastel assortment) and a very small pack with a few jump rings and lobster clasps to get you started. I’m glad that i now know what to expect, but not sure how often I will end up using it as it seems a bit less efficient than I had hoped.

Don’t bother
I love making jewellery and particularly bracelets and was hoping this was going to be the answer to all my fiddling with seed beads. Unfortunately not. My first issue is that there are no instructions, and whilst it didn’t take too long to find a video clip on youtube, it would have been handy to have these in the box. Secondly, the beads shown to come with the pack definitely show pony beads, whist the ones that arrived were seed beads. Very different in size! The information states that this will work with clay beads – it does not. Finally, the needles that come with the kit (of which there were only 2) did not have eyes big enough to take elastic thread. This will be relegated to the back of the craft shelf before making its way to the charity shop or bin. Don’t waste your hard earned money.
