The Vignelli Canon

Too short.
Wish it had more information it just has a small paragraph per page about one idea. Example: Font these are the fonts I like, (lists fonts, because they are plain. (Opposite page shows example of fonts) next page. Grids I like grids because they make everything organized (opposite page shows example of how he used a grid in a newspaper article). That goes on for maybe 20 pages then end of book. I could’ve got this information on the internet. If it was going to be like that at least give me 50-80 pages worth of short blurbs and examples. Give me logo examples, identity design, marketing, architecture, something. He has years of work to go over. Give me more!

Necessary
I love this little design companion and am so happy I ordered the paperback. The pdf is available for free on the world wide web if you're strapped for cash but still need some inspiration. But having the pages to flip through and see the design laid out across the spread is worth the purchase.

One more example of how printed books are superior to their e-counterparts.

design 101
This is a hidden gem for me. I recently discovered it and am so glad I did. This book is like the basic rule book foundation for design. I think that everyone touching the adobe suite should be forced to read this first. It reduces everything in design to it's simplest and most elegant form. From this foundation, beauty can be created. Must read.

Buy this.
Incredible book written to show some of Vignelli's style and approach. I would suggest that adopting this approach is extremely challenging--it's something Vignelli felt from within, so I've struggled mightily to incorporate it in my daily design work. But the book is frank, simple, and straight forward.
