Symphony 3

I first bought this recording on German EMI lp release. A two record boxed set. The symphonywas on three sides - side 4 was blank. It is my favorite recording of the final version of this symphony by far!! It is great to have it on cd!!Spacious sound for a spacious reading of the score ! The Gewandhaus orchestra plays beautifully!!Steve Causey

Now that the inveterate Bruckner aficionado and Amazon presence Bernard Michael O'Hanlon has --finally-- discovered what a great disc this is, and is trumpeting it to the world, I'd just like to add my vote here to add one more to the five-star column, and if I could, I would point out that I did mention this recording to him a number of years ago. But, sadly, I am not among the ranks of those who really count as Bruckner reviewers, so... While I still basically prefer the 1873 version of the symphony to the 1889 one on offer here, there's no reason not to let yourself be swept up in a great reading like this. Recommended to one and all.

Finally, after at least two decades of searching, I've found "my" Bruckner Third! As a romantic reading of this symphony, this one is just perfect. The tempi are almost as slow as Celibidache's. While I generally like small tempi, I always thought there's something missing in his interpretation with the MPO. Now I know: the sound on this CD is just very full and warm. It's pretty unbelievable that this was recorded in 1963 - the sound is BETTER than on most recent CDs I've heard. Plus the brass section is wonderful.Sanderling uses (not much) more rubato than Celi, he gets pretty slow at times (Finale coda for example). But there is so much details, beauty and also power here - it just works.Still searching for an overwhelming recording of the 1873 and 1877 version of this version. Tintner would probably be it - with a better orchestra (and sound quality).

This 1965 recording of Bruckner's third symphony (1889 version), with Kurt Sanderling conducting Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, incarnates clearly one of the greatest performances of this work. Sanderling's grasp of this symphony is simply outstanding - like no one else, he completely understands the inner logic and dynamic structure of Bruckner's demanding score. The result is just deeply moving. In addition, the sound and playing is very fine too.So this is the recording I play most often when I want to listen to one of Bruckner's greatest symphonic achievements (together with the fifth, eight, and ninth). For reference, one must consider such recordings as Jochum's (DG), Kubelik's (Audite) and Schuricht's (Preiser). But this recording would be my desert island Bruckner third. Strongly and warmly recommended.

Die Aufnahme aus der Mitte der sechziger Jahre ist natürlich klanglich nicht ganz auf der Höhe der heutigen Zeit, aber hervorragend überarbeitet und angesichts der fast fünfzig Jahre seit ihrer Produktion wirklich gut. Die Dynamik ist weitestgehend sehr gut, nur bei manchen Fortestellen minimal gedämpft. Sanderlings Herangehen an Bruckner entspricht ungefähr dem Klemperers, er hat Zeit, musiziert wird sehr melodisch, ruhig, transparent, organisch, bar jedweder Effekthascherei, oft eher verhalten als überspitzt dramatisch, mit tiefem Sinn für Bruckners Pausen. Im zweiten Satz tristanmäßig tiefgängig, meditativ, im dritten geradezu tänzerisch-melancholisch, aber auch abgründig, vielleicht von Klezmer geprägt, von wunderbarer Melodik beseelt, mit großem Atem und zwingender Logik. Für meine Begriffe, ich kenne ungefähr zehn Einspielungen, von Jochum und Szell bis Wand, die alle ihre Meriten haben, ist dies die beste Aufnahme dieses Werks, das Gewandhausorchester mit seinem sonor-warmen Klang, vor allem in den Streichern und Holzbläsern, stellt wieder seine Ausnahmequalität unter Beweis. Dirigent und Orchester musizieren innigst verbunden.

久々のレビューです。サンデルリンクとゲバントハウス1960年代の録音で音が割れたりしますが、大変情熱的なブルックナー3番です。音の強弱、リズムの実に心地よい揺れは、ヴァントやヨッフムのそれとは異なり実に衝撃的です。サンデルリンクが流しの指揮者でなく、ゲバントハウスの常任となり全集を出していたら世の中変わっていたのではと思いました。サンデルリンクのブラームス交響曲全集やショスタコービッチ交響曲選集とは別人かと聞き入りました。音楽をCDで集めるのが時代遅れになってきています。いい曲は少しでも多くCDでも残してほしい。今回は、購入が間に合って大変幸運でした。

Je suis désolé de ne pas partager l'enthousiasme des autres qui ont écouté ce disque. Je ne suis ni musicien ni musicologue: mon avis sera celui d'un modeste mélomane. J'ai découvert cette symphonie il y a quelques 45 ans et je ne cesse de la découvrir au-travers des divers enregistrements que j'ai entendus et aussi des concerts auxquels j'ai pu assister. Ainsi ai-je donc eu le bonheur d'entendre cette Troisième dirigée par Jochum, Karajan, Celidibache, Inbal (dont le principal mérite est de nous avoir donné une lecture de la version primitive) pour ne nommer que ceux-là. La lecture que nous Sanderling dans cet enregistrement est belle, énergique (la franchise des attaques) mais à mon sens elle "oublie" une caractéristique fondamentale de la musique de Bruckner: le profond sens religieux qui imprégnait le compositeur! Certes cette "Wagner Symphonie" n'est pas une oeuvre où le "religieux" tient le premier plan, y compris dans l'adagio. Mais la lecture de Sanderling me paraît néanmoins trop profane, voire violente ... La Troisième me semble alors moins brucknérienne que wagnérienne. Or Bruckner est Bruckner!! Je me sens infiniment plus proche de la lecture Celidibache-Munich (chez EMI) que de celle de Sanderling. Mais c'est là une conception très personnelle des choses...
