Product Description This film comprises three short pieces by three directors (Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen and Francis Ford Coppola) about life in New York City. The first, 'Life Lessons' is directed by Scorsese and focuses on a painter (Nick Nolte) whose young girlfriend (Rosanna Arquette) leaves him. The second, 'Life Without Zoe' is directed by Coppola and centres on a rich young girl (Talia Shire) who wants to reunite her parents and the third, Allen's 'Oedipus Wrecks' focuses on a neurotic lawyer (Allen) who can't escape the interfering influence of his mother. From .co.uk New York Stories comprises three views of life in the city of all cities, with segments directed by Woody Allen, Francis Coppola, and Martin Scorsese. The best of the three is Scorsese's "Life Lessons", about an artist (played by Nick Nolte) who uses his hyper-success to lure beautiful, young, aspiring artists to serve as his assistant/lovers. It's an astute portrait of the nature of the New York art world. In "Life Without Zoe", Coppola portrays the life of the privileged daughter of a world-renowned flautist, whose adventures on the Upper East Side (in the upper echelons of society) play like something approaching a cartoon. Woody Allen finishes up the film with his "Oedipus Wrecks", a typical Allen number about a successful New York lawyer who's still hounded by his mother--the title tells you all you need to know. Though stronger segments to complement Scorsese's would have made the movie as a whole much more interesting and enjoyable, it does at least provide an accurate glimpse of life in the Big Apple. --James McGrath, .com

Four stars to Scorsese, three to Allen, two to Coppola
Maybe it does not deserve 4 stars, yet the first episode by Scorsese is the real thin about this film and helps it make sense, both for its cinematic values and for the fact that it is definitely the episode that catches the spiriti of this operation and say something interesting (and in an interesting way) about NY, thanks to Scorsese ability to make cinema within the wall of a degrading loft and to Nolte, in one of his best performances ever. The Allen episode is also nice and is perfectly responding to what you expect from him as a New Yorker, also with the funny idea of a metaphir of NY as a giant Mammy that always looks over you, for good and for bad. The Coppola episode is one of his worst work ever, so forget it and forgive him.

New York Stories.
Three stories by three directors set in New York City. The first, from Martin Scorsese is a clichΓ©d portrayal of an abstract artist as an egotistical, self-centred man-child obsessed with his (untalented) assistant and muse who's clearly too young for him β an unconvincing story β though the portrayal of the pretentious NY high-art scene is probably accurate. The Coppola story is simply appalling; intended to be βcuteβ and light-hearted, it's an indulgent, badly conceived piece of kitsch.Woody Allen's contribution is the only successful story in the set; a whimsical fantasy, it's not top-notch Allen, but is way ahead of any of the others here in terms of imagination, humour and execution; it has many of Allen's themes and traits β a slight tale but still funny and entertaining.Buy this for the Allen story β otherwise don't expect much. The UK DVD release has no extras; English subtitles are available if required.4 stars for the Allen, 3 for the Scorsese, none for the Coppola.

Nice trilogy
A good trilogy of films. I bought it mainly because I am a Woody Allen huge fan of. Not his best but enjoyable. The other two films were good and the DVD was very cheap.

Film set in NY
The short film by Allen is hilariously true, and the story set among artists is quite interesting even though a bit dejΓ vu. All in all a good film.
